Civil resistance
\nagainst GAM rebels<\/p>\n

At least eight people including a high school student have
\nallegedly again been taken hostage by the separatist Free Aceh
\nMovement (GAM) amid the apparent government's attempt to release
\nRCTI cameraman Fery Santoro and possibly hundreds of others.<\/p>\n
GAM's move has apparently shown its lack of good will to set
\nfree all hostages and rendered its promises meaningless. In this
\nway the image of GAM is further worsened in the eyes of the
\nAcehnese, the Indonesian public and the international community.<\/p>\n
The increasingly difficult position of GAM following military
\npressure and shrinking logistic supplies in fact should cause
\npanic among the separatists. The sacrifice of civilians as human
\nshields, is bad, especially since GAM boasted about its prowess
\nwhen it declared war against the Indonesian military and police.<\/p>\n
The military and police refusal to make political deals with
\nGAM or accept its conditions for the release of hostages is
\ntherefore appropriate. Any concession given to GAM would set a
\nbad precedent for the law enforcement effort in Aceh, because the
\nmovement's action is against humanity.<\/p>\n
In order to maintain public security in Aceh, local civilians
\nshould put up strong resistance and support the military\/police
\nto crush the rebel group and end its violence for the survival of
\nthe Acehnese.<\/p>\n
