'Civic Education launched'<\/p>\n
YOGYAKARTA: In a bid to help accelerate the development of
\ndemocracy in Indonesia, the country's second-largest Muslim
\norganization, Muhammadiyah, has published a textbook,Civic
\nEducation, for students at Muhammadiyah universities across the
\nnation.<\/p>\n
Chairman of Muhammadiyah Ahmad Syafii Maarif officially
\nlaunched the 454-page book on Thursday at the organization's
\nheadquarters in Yogyakarta, attended by other Muhammadiyah
\nexecutives, lecturers of local universities and activists from
\nlocal non-government organizations with special concern on
\neducation.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the launch ceremony chairman of Muhammadiyah's
\nassembly for higher education, research and development Zamroni
\nsaid that publication of the book was prompted by the lack of
\ncivic education in universities, especially as the controversial
\nP4 (Pedoman Pendidikan dan Pengamalan Pancasila, or guidance for
\nthe education and application of Pancasila) was annulled some
\nyears ago.<\/p>\n
\"The type of civic education we have developed is not
\nmonotonous or one-way, but is instead a dynamic, learning process
\nthat will help students seek the characteristics that contribute
\nto upholding democratic values, as a preparation for entering the
\ndemocratic world,\" Zamroni said. --JP<\/p>",
