        "content": "<p>City's pollution<\/p>\n<p>On Jan. 14, 1997, I noticed something quite odd after taking a<br>\nglance at The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n<p>* On page 6: A picture of a man and his young daughter protecting<br>\nthemselves with anti-smog masks in Dhaka's streets. The caption<br>\nsaid: \"Officials say pollution is mainly blamed on vehicle<br>\nemission in a city of millions of people.\"<\/p>\n<p>* On page 9: \"Some Bangkok residents use handkerchiefs as<br>\nprotection against the streets' smog. The caption said particles<br>\ncarrying germs are a major cause of allergies and respiratory<br>\ndisease.\"<\/p>\n<p>* On page 4: A letter from an environmentalist highlighting the<br>\nresponsibility of respiratory apparatuses in helping fight<br>\ndiseases suffered by cigarette smokers.<\/p>\n<p>Although I am an inveterate smoker, I also acknowledge that<br>\nnon-smokers have their rights and they shouldn't become the<br>\nvictims of our bad habit. For instance, although on one hand I<br>\nagree that smoking in hospitals is ignoble behavior since the<br>\npatients cannot breathe clean air, on the other hand I cannot<br>\navoid wondering what happens to the same patients when<br>\ndischarged. Unfortunately, the answer is very simple. Although<br>\nstill convalescent, they will enter the \"gas chamber\" of city<br>\nstreets.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, environmentalists should direct their laudable<br>\npurposes towards solving the problems of pollution in Jakarta<br>\nfirst. They should pressure authorities to organize specialized<br>\nteams responsible for controlling vehicles spitting \"clouds of<br>\npoison\" over the city, moreover at a risk to children. For sure,<br>\nsome irresponsible drivers should be arrested and tried for<br>\n\"manslaughter\".<\/p>\n<p>Trying to solve or reduce the problems of respiratory disease<br>\nthrough the \"segregation\" of cigarette smokers and not by trying<br>\nto reduce the city's pollution problems is like treating cancer<br>\nwith aspirin.<\/p>\n<p>PIERO RONCI<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta<\/p>",
