City transit system needs breakthrough<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A transportation expert of Trisakti University
\nurged the city administration yesterday to adopt a clear-cut
\nmegapolitan strategy on transportation and urban development to
\nhelp solve problems of the chronic congestion in the city.<\/p>\n
F. Trisbiantara, a lecturer of the university's civil
\nengineering and planning school, said in a one-day seminar on
\ntransportation that failure to adopt a suitable transportation
\nsystem would have the city facing chaotic transportation
\nproblems.<\/p>\n
\"It is important for the city administration to choose an
\nappropriate system to help solve traffic congestion, which forces
\nmotorists to spend much of their time on the roads every day,\"
\nTrisbiantara said.<\/p>\n
The seminar, which was opened by Deputy Governor for
\nGovernment Affairs Idroes, was held by Trisakti University in
\ncooperation with Mott Mac Donald International, PT Djasa
\nUbersakti, PT Dayatama Intratechnika Nusantara, Universiti
\nTeknologi Malaysia and MS TRI 104.4 FM radio station.<\/p>\n
Trisbiantara reiterated that current congestion problems will
\nworsen if the administration does nothing and just lets the
\ncurrent transportation system run the way it is.<\/p>\n
According to him the current transportation system in the
\ncity is inconsistent, and that once a particular strategy is
\nadopted the administration should be consistent in its
\nimplementation.<\/p>\n
He also pointed out that the city public transportation
\nservices are poor and unreliable.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore it is also important to improve the quality of the
\ncity mass transportation means,\" Trisbiantara said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Idroes said that the city administration has
\nplanned a city mass rapid transit system to accommodate commuters
\nuntil 2015. The first stage of the system is to build a 13-km
\nsubway system between Blok M and Kota.<\/p>\n
\"The city administration realizes that traffic constitutes the
\nbiggest problem in the city,\" Idroes said. (yns)<\/p>",
