City told to boost self-financed transmigration plan<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Transmigration Siswono Yudohusodo
\nhas called on the municipal administration to promote the self-
\nfinanced transmigration program due to budgetary constraints
\nfaced by the central government.<\/p>\n
The minister said that each year the government can afford to
\nfinance the relocation of only 2,380 families from Jakarta to
\ntransmigration sites outside of Java.<\/p>\n
"Therefore the self-funded transmigration program is very
\nimportant and urgent," Siswono said.<\/p>\n
Siswono was speaking on Monday evening at a gathering,
\norganized by the municipality to boost the campaigns for the
\nenhancement of public mobility and participation in the
\ntransmigration program.<\/p>\n
Also in attendance were Jakarta Governor Surjadi Soedirdja and
\n265 chiefs of subdistricts.<\/p>\n
The minister said transmigration is one of the solutions to
\nthe population problem faced by the capital.<\/p>\n
With around 8.5 million residents, the capital, which measures
\n661.26 square kilometers in area, has an average population
\ndensity of 12,435 people per square kilometer.<\/p>\n
In some subdistricts where the population density is
\nparticularly high, such as Johar Baru (the most densely-populated
\narea in the entire country with 51,624 people per square
\nkilometer), Tambora, Matraman, Kemayoran, Taman Sari, Palmerah,
\nJatinegara, Tebet and Grogol Petamburan, there are an average of
\n106,016 farmers and 101,980 unemployed people, said the minister.<\/p>\n
"For them, transmigration is a good alternative," he said.<\/p>\n
The minister said the self-funded transmigrants would receive
\naround two hectares of land from the government at the
\ntransmigration site they are resettled to.<\/p>\n
The municipality has sent 20,672 families, or a total of
\n82,688 people, to transmigration sites over the past 25 years.<\/p>\n
Background<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Governor Surjadi said the transmigration program
\nfor Jakarta residents should be designed so that it suits the
\nurban background of the would-be transmigrants.<\/p>\n
"Unlike rural people who make their living as farmers, urban
\npeople make their living through skills and services," Surjadi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The governor said the municipality long ago introduced the so-
\ncalled "industrial service transmigration program" in cooperation
\nwith the provincial administrations of Southeast Sulawesi, South
\nKalimantan and Riau, where most of the transmigration sites are
\nlocated.<\/p>\n
Under the joint program, the city administration is obliged to
\ntrain the would-be transmigrants in various industrial skills
\nbefore they are sent to the designated settlement sites.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said he fully supported the campaigns to boost the
\nself-financed transmigration program, but noted "it will take a
\nlong time to ingrain the spirit of pioneering necessary for this
\nendeavor in the people, because it encompasses a set of attitudes
\nincluding bravery and the willingness to face risks and forsake
