        "content": "<p>City to work with human rights body to monitor right abuses<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Governor Surjadi Soedirdja vowed on Tuesday to<br>\ncontinue improving public services in the capital, saying also<br>\nthat the National Commission on Human Rights will help monitor<br>\nthe impact of development to avoid human rights abuse.<\/p>\n<p>\"We're still working on it. But we have already conducted a<br>\nmeeting to compare our perspectives,\" Surjadi said, referring to<br>\na meeting between the commission and the administration on<br>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>In a related development, he also reaffirmed that the Jakarta<br>\nadministration will continue to step up its efforts to improve<br>\npublic services.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier reports said that members of the commission, including<br>\nRoekmini Koesoemo Astoeti and Djoko Soegianto, had met Surjadi<br>\nat City Hall for talks on human rights abuse in Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the commission and the administration will<br>\napparently establish a regular forum to solve problems related to<br>\nhuman rights.<\/p>\n<p>Hundred of Jakartans have visited the commission to seek help<br>\nfollowing dozens of land disputes, labor strikes, violence cases<br>\nand even political conflicts.<\/p>\n<p>Minibus drivers, farmers, workers, journalists, reverends of a<br>\ndisputed Protestant church and even Buddhist monks have in the<br>\npast gone to the commission for help.<\/p>\n<p>\"The subject and purpose of our development is human beings,<br>\naren't they? So development must be carried out along with the<br>\nimplementation of human rights. That's quite simple,\" Surjadi<br>\nsaid<\/p>\n<p>Referring to a nine-point strategic plan, which includes the<br>\nimprovement of public transportation and slum areas, Surjadi said<br>\nthe administration had already drawn out a plan to overcome poor<br>\npublic services.<\/p>\n<p>Minister of Administrative Reform T.B. Silalahi said in a<br>\nhearing with the House of Representative on Monday that sex<br>\nscandals, corruption and poor public service are common factors<br>\nthese days.<\/p>\n<p>Silalahi said that although the capital has won the Parasamya<br>\nPurnakarya Nugraha, it does not necessarily mean that it has<br>\nmaintained good public services.<\/p>\n<p>Parasamya is given to provinces for their outstanding<br>\nachievement during the past Five Year Development (Pelita)<br>\nperiod.<\/p>\n<p>\"We should not be complacent after winning the award. Our<br>\npoints were better than other provinces. That's all. It doesn't<br>\nshow that we have excellent public service,\" he said.(09)<\/p>",
