City to get tough on prostitutes<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration is determined to
\ncontinue its efforts to clean up the illegal operation of
\nprostitutes and miscreants on the city's streets, despite the
\nresistance to its operations, an officer said.<\/p>\n
Hadi Utomo, head of the city public order office, said,
\n\"Whatever happens, we will not stop operations against them.\"<\/p>\n
Hadi made the remarks on Tuesday after a group of prostitutes
\nwith the help of hoodlums pelted stones at dozens of the public
\norder officers at the Prumpung viaduct on Jl. Panjaitan in East
\nJakarta on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
During the attack, three officers, identified as Machmud, 40,
\nSoleh, 30 and Basri, 35, were injured, and two of the office's
\nvans were damaged, he said.<\/p>\n
Machmud was severely injured, and underwent head surgery at
\nthe Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital in Central Jakarta. Hadi said his
\ncondition was now improving.<\/p>\n
\"I already visited him. He was conscious but still weak,\" Hadi
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The attack took place when the public order officers were
\nheading toward the viaduct after what Hadi called a successful
\noperation involving prostitutes in the Boker area of Ciracas,
\nEast Jakarta.<\/p>\n
When the officers arrived at the scene at around 9 p.m.,
\nhowever, some hoodlums threw stones, bottles, wood and other
\nitems at them, Hadi said.<\/p>\n
Twenty-two people were arrested and temporarily detained at
\nthe East Jakarta police station for questioning. (ylt)<\/p>",
