        "content": "<p>City to enforce Ramadhan curfew<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The city administration has promised to take<br>\nstern action against amusement centers violating regulations,<br>\nespecially those concerning closing hours during the fasting<br>\nmonth.<\/p>\n<p>The deputy governor for administrative affairs, Idroes said<br>\nyesterday that he had instructed subordinates to punish the<br>\nowners of bars, discotheques, night clubs and other entertainment<br>\ncenters who broke the regulations. \"Regulations must be enforced<br>\nproperly. No matter who backs them up,\" he stressed.<\/p>\n<p>Members of the youth organization Pemuda Pancasila have<br>\nvisited the City Council reporting that several amusement centers<br>\nhave failed to abide by the closing-hour regulation for Ramadhan<br>\nset by the authorities.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said that many bars, nightclubs, discotheques<br>\nand massage parlors in the city stay open until 10 a.m. and it<br>\naccused the Zodiac, Atlanta, Terminal One and Hailai as allegedly<br>\nbeing among the worst offenders.<\/p>\n<p>It said that some of the places are even forcing employees to<br>\nwork until dawn and several of the centers are being used as<br>\nsites for illegal drug transactions.<\/p>\n<p>\"We could not punish them as they are backed by relatives of<br>\nhigh ranking officials,\" Toha Reno, an official of the city<br>\npublic order office said on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Toha, who heads the city's entertainment department, said many<br>\nof these places are backed by \"powerful people\", whom most city<br>\nofficials are too afraid of to investigate.<\/p>\n<p>According to the regulations, night clubs, discotheques and<br>\nkaraoke halls have to close by 2 a.m., while fitness centers and<br>\nmassage parlors must close at 11 p.m. Live music performances,<br>\ncultural events, bars, pubs and coffee shops can remain open<br>\nuntil midnight.<\/p>\n<p>On a related development, Deputy Governor for People's Welfare<br>\nR.S. Museno denied allegations that the city administration had<br>\nbeen too weak to take action against violators.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have closed down three amusement centers for violating the<br>\nregulations,\" he said, citing the closure of the Atrium food<br>\ncourt Pasar Senen, Indiana bar and restaurant in Kemang and<br>\nParkit, a discotheque on Jl. Wahid Hasyim, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>When asked about \"powerful people\" behind the amusement<br>\ncenters, Museno said no one would receive special treatment if<br>\ncaught infringing the regulations.
