City to build large-scale chicken slaughterhouse<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration is to build its first
\nlarge-scale chicken slaughterhouse in a bid to fully control the
\nquality of the meat distributed to the market, a city official
\nsaid on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Sri Mulyono, a senior official from the city livestock
\nhusbandry agency, said the new slaughterhouse was urgently
\nneeded. He said the agency had experienced difficulties in
\ncontrolling the distribution of the chicken meat due to the
\nscattered locations of the existing small chicken
\nslaughterhouses.<\/p>\n
\"To develop the slaughterhouse, the city administration will
\nreceive loans worth US$100,000 (about Rp 700 million at the
\ncurrent rate) from the World Bank.<\/p>\n
\"The memorandum of understanding itself has already been
\nsigned, but we have not yet decided when the construction work
\nwill begin,\" Sri said.<\/p>\n
Total construction costs for the slaughterhouse, to be built
\non a two-hectare plot in Penggilingan, East Jakarta, are
\nestimated at about Rp 1 billion.<\/p>\n
\"The administration will finance 20 percent of the total
\ncost,\" Sri said.<\/p>\n
In addition to the main project, temporary shelters for
\nsuppliers would also be constructed at the site to accommodate
\nsuppliers who hail from areas outside Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Currently, the city only has large-scale slaughterhouses for
\nsheep, buffaloes and pigs.<\/p>\n
Sri said the planned chicken slaughterhouse would have a
\nproduction capacity of between 20,000 and 30,000 chickens per
\nday.<\/p>\n
He acknowledged, however, that the city needed a
\nslaughterhouse with a larger output capacity in order to meet the
\ncapital's daily demand for an average 300,000 chickens.<\/p>\n
\"Later, if we still have adequate funds and land space, we'll
\nbuild similar slaughterhouse in each of the four mayoralties.
\nCentral Jakarta will not be included on the list due to the lack
\nof space in the area,\" Sri said.<\/p>\n
Chicken meat distributed to the Jakarta markets is currently
\nsupplied from some 1,000 small slaughterhouses scattered in and
\naround the capital.<\/p>\n
\"About 99 percent of the demand in the capital comes from
\nother provinces, particularly the neighboring West Java area,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Sri guaranteed that the supply of chicken meat for the
\nupcoming Christmas, New Year and Idul Fitri festivities in
\nJakarta would be adequate.<\/p>\n
\"Weeks ago we had a meeting with poultry breeders who said
\nthat they experienced no problems in meeting the city's demand,\"
