City tightens building licensing<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will refuse to issue
\noccupancy permits for high-rise buildings unless they are
\nprovided with proper fire safety equipment, a senior official has
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
\"Developers and owners should not think they can transfer and
\nuse the building once it is completed but without adequate fire
\nprecaution facilities,\" Abdul Kahfi, deputy governor of
\nadministrative affairs, said Tuesday.<\/p>\n
When asked why only a few of the government's tall buildings
\nhad been provided with such facilities, he said he would make
\nsure that all buildings were equipped.<\/p>\n
He said the administration would ask the city's fire
\ndepartment to check on high-rise buildings for fire equipment,
\nAntara reported.<\/p>\n
Fire department chief Suharso said about 60 percent of the
\nfire equipment available in tall buildings throughout the city
\ndid not meet the standard requirements.<\/p>\n
Official figures show that Jakarta has 814 high-rise
\nbuildings. The fire department has 113 fire engines and 3,000
\nemployees who handle about 1,000 fires a year.<\/p>\n
Between Jan. 1 and March 21 this year, 155 fires occurred in
\nJakarta, according to the department's data. (pan)<\/p>",
