        "content": "<p>City starts crackdown on migrants<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Despite criticism, the Jakarta city administration has<br>\nofficially launched an operation against illegal migrants in an<br>\neffort to curb urbanization.<\/p>\n<p>Thamrin Ekadjati, an assistant to the city secretary, said<br>\nthat the raids against the illegal migrants would be conducted in<br>\nslum areas, such as on the Penjaringan riverbanks and in East<br>\nAncol, North Jakarta and Pondok Kopi, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p>\"There will be action taken against illegal migrants. But it<br>\ndoesn't meant that Jakarta is a closed city,\" Thamrin told 160<br>\nofficers at a ceremony at the National Monument park on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The officers would conduct an education program, such as<br>\ndistributing brochures on the importance of identification, until<br>\nSaturday before conducting the raids next week.<\/p>\n<p>The officers would hand out the brochures to newcomers in<br>\npublic places in the city's five mayoralties, including Gambir<br>\nRailway station and the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Newcomers, who wanted to live here and get official<br>\nidentification should have several documents, including housing<br>\nand job guarantees, Thamrin said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Bylaw No. 1\/1996 on population, newcomers who<br>\nhave stayed more than 14 days should have identification or be<br>\nliable to a maximum sentence of three month in jail or a Rp 5<br>\nmillion (US$500) fine.<\/p>\n<p>The administration receives Rp 1.75 billion annually from<br>\nidentity card registration and renewal.<\/p>\n<p>Activists have criticized the planned raids against migrants<br>\nas a violation of a person's right to unrestricted travel.<\/p>\n<p>About 250,000 new migrants arrive in Jakarta each year, mainly<br>\nafter Idul Fitri celebrations.<\/p>",
