City slum areas reflect social gap: Soeharto<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): President Soeharto said yesterday that slum
\nareas in the city are a reflection of the social gap in society
\nand all people should work together to do away with those areas.<\/p>\n
The President made the statement when inaugurating a low cost
\napartment complex at Bidara Cina subdistrict in East Jakarta. The
\nconstruction was partly financed by conglomerates.<\/p>\n
Soeharto pointed out that building low cost apartments
\nreflects that social solidarity among Indonesians is still high
\nand it is important to continue maintaining this attitude
\nbecause the development of this country is not only for certain
\nindividuals but for all Indonesians.<\/p>\n
"I hope this social activity can stimulate other businessmen
\nto participate in building low cost apartments in Indonesia and I
\nurge real estate companies to not only build luxurious homes but
\nalso low cost ones," Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
The President also commended efforts to replace slum dwellings
\nwith low cost apartments which are healthier and cleaner.<\/p>\n
"It is important to start building vertical housing because if
\nwe continue building just houses there will be no space for
\nagriculture," he said.<\/p>\n
Soeharto also stressed the importance of assessing people's
\ncapability of buying apartments without ignoring other aspects,
\nsuch as security, charm and the quality of the apartment.<\/p>\n
"Just don't forget that the apartment is for those who have
\nlimited incomes," Soeharto said.<\/p>\n
Bidara Cina low cost apartment was built for those who used to
\nlive along the Ciliwung river bank. The project was built from
\nfunds donated by conglomerates to commemorate National Social
\nSolidarity day in 1993.<\/p>\n
During a discussion with the residents after the ceremony,
\nSoeharto said the government intends to continue the kampong
\nimprovement project by building low cost apartments in what are
\nat present slum areas.<\/p>\n
Governor Surjadi Soedirdja reported that the apartment
\ncomplex consists of seven blocks of five-story buildings with a
\ntotal of 688 apartments.<\/p>\n
The governor said Bidara Cina apartment complex is different
\nfrom other low cost apartments in the city because it is built as
\npart of the Ciliwung river rehabilitation project and financed by
\nseveral agencies such as the City Administration, Ministry of
\nSocial Services, Public Works Ministry and various conglomerates.<\/p>\n
Surjadi said the city administration has so far built about
\n8.734 low cost apartments and about 2.687 apartments are still
\nunder construction.<\/p>\n
The governor said the production cost for one apartment is Rp
\n30 million but since the city administration gives more than a 50
\npercent subsidy buyers will pay less than the full value.<\/p>\n
The price of an apartment on the first floor is Rp 15 million
\nwhich can be paid on an installment basis, Rp 12.48 million for
\nthe second floor, Rp 11.89 million on the third floor and Rp
\n11.250 on the fourth floor. (yns)<\/p>",
