City police continue the hunt for 'big bosses' of drug gangs<\/p>\n

Despite several big arrests over the last several weeks, the
\npolice are still searching for several big drug bosses involved
\nin producing and selling heroin, crystal methamphetamine, ecstasy
\nand marijuana.<\/p>\n
The head of the city police's drug unit, Sr. Comr. Carlo Brix
\nTewu, said on Monday they had identified several big dealers
\noperating in the capital and had put them on the wanted list for
\nimmediate arrest.<\/p>\n
\"They are the ones who supply the drugs to most of the smaller
\ndealers at the regency level. Unless we nab them, drug use in the
\ncity will continue to rise,\" he told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Police arrested four suspected drug dealers last week,
\nincluding one woman gang leader, identified as Ray Rezani, and
\nconfiscated 72 grams of crystal methamphetamine, or shabu-shabu,
\nin joint raids in Greater Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Carlo said Ray and her gang were only one of 29 groups dealing
\nshabu-shabu in Jakarta allegedly controlled from Hong Kong by Au
\nYun Ceun, alias Apui, and two South Korean citizens, Toni and
\nAtiong.<\/p>\n
\"We have nabbed some of them and will continue to hunt down
\nthe rest. They are helped by hundreds of distributors and smaller
\ndealers at the regency, district, subdistrict and neighborhood
\nlevels,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Several alleged big drug distributors in the city have been
\nidentified as Ahong, Yung Yung, Tina, Yanti, Sou Ha, Aliong,
\nHendri, Devi, Lukman, Indra, Hari and Beni Pendi.<\/p>\n
Carlo said that all of these people had direct contact with
\nthe big drug bosses in Hong Kong and were supplied directly from
\nthe Chinese territory.<\/p>\n
\"They transfer a certain amount of money through an account at
\na private bank in Jakarta and the drugs are sent to several fake
\naddresses to avoid police suspicion,\" he said.<\/p>\n
In addition to syndicates specializing in shabu-shabu, police
\nare also investigating other groups that deal mainly in heroin
\nand ecstasy.<\/p>\n
Carlo said that in most cases, the heroin was distributed by
\nAfrican citizens, including Nigerians and Rwandans. He said the
\npolice had made numerous arrests, but there were always new
\ndistributors to take their places.<\/p>\n
Last Wednesday, police arrested a Nigerian citizen identified
\nas Ramacau Jonas, 32, in Tangerang, Banten, and confiscated 50
\ngrams of heroin.<\/p>\n
Convicted drug dealers can face the death penalty under
\nIndonesian law, and several African, Indian and Thai citizens
\nhave been sentenced to death and executed under these tough drug
\nlaws. However, drug use in the city continues to rise.<\/p>\n
Carlo said ecstasy remained in high demand among Jakartans
\nand many distributors could produce thousands of ecstasy pills a
\nday.<\/p>\n
\"We have carried out raids and closed down ecstasy factories
\nnumerous times but they seem to be able to build another factory
\nin another area instantly,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Recently, officers from the city police confiscated 13,000
\necstasy pills from two warehouses in the Mutiara complex in Taman
\nPalem, Cengkareng, West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Carlo said the majority of the ecstasy trade in Jakarta was
\nallegedly controlled by six big bosses he identified as Burhan
\nTahar, Ale, Joni, Herry Tjung Senjaya, Tjie Kwang Oh, and Tinna.<\/p>\n
\"In our arrests in ecstasy cases, the suspects always mention
\none of these names as their distributors. We have made their
\narrests our top priority,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Carlo said the police had deployed about 400 undercover
\nofficers to track down all of the drug fugitives.<\/p>",
