City Park Agency embarks on a regreening project<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Park Agency will launch a major
\nregreening project next year, focusing primarily on 17 \"slum\"
\nareas in the city.<\/p>\n
The project will attempt to establish parks in these locations
\nwhere sufficient space is available or to plant more trees where
\nspace is not available.<\/p>\n
Agency Chief Dadang Ruskandar said on Wednesday that the parks
\nwill be designed to be community centers where local residents
\ncan gather and relax.<\/p>\n
The parks' construction and maintenance will be fully financed
\nby the agency.<\/p>\n
\"Each location will receive Rp 200 million (US$21,052) as an
\ninitial investment,\" Dadang said adding that the money would be
\nallocated from the maintenance funds of already established parks
\nwhich will be maintained by private companies.<\/p>\n
Most of the initial setup funds, between Rp 120 million to Rp
\n150 million, will go towards acquiring the land for the parks.<\/p>\n
The 17 locations were identified as Petojo Selatan, Galur and
\nKarang Anyar subdistricts in Central Jakarta, two locations in
\nthe Tanjung Priok subdistrict and one in the Papanggo subdistrict
\nin North Jakarta, the Tegal Alur subdistrict and three locations
\nat Kapuk subdistrict in West Jakarta. Parks will also be
\nestablished at the Grogol Utara subdistrict and three locations
\nat the Kebayoran Lama Utara subdistrict in South Jakarta, along
\nwith the Klender subdistrict and two locations in Rawa Bunga
\nsubdistrict in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The office has reportedly identified land plots in each
\nlocation and most of these are said to be empty or to belong to
\nthe state. The size of the plots vary from 25 square meters to
\n600 square meters.<\/p>\n
\"We are still awaiting input from the general public and
\nespecially from non-government organizations to establish the
\nmost appropriate concepts for the projects. We urge the public to
\ngive us information or ideas on this,\" Dadang remarked.<\/p>\n
\"We also hope for the public's awareness of the need to really
\ntake care of the parks. We have already established two sample
\nprojects at Pejompongan subdistrict, where the Community Unit Top
\nLeader is in charge of the park's maintenance,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Dadang also said that seven companies have responded to the
\nCity Administration's offer to privatize the maintenance of parts
\nof the Semanggi cloverleaf park area in the heart of the city.<\/p>\n
The seven companies were said to be PT. Kawan Lama Sejahtera,
\nPT. Hantar Mandiri, PT. Kinarya Inti Management, PT. Lavenia, PT.
\nSunda West, PT. Sandya Nugratama, PT. Dian Group.<\/p>\n
Under the proposed arrangement, which was introduced some six
\nmonths ago, the companies -- in return for maintaining the parks
\n-- would be allowed to place their name on the signboard in their
\nrespective areas of management.<\/p>\n
The signboards would be similar to advertising billboards
\nplaced on major city streets.<\/p>\n
Jakarta used to be home to 529 parks covering an area of
\n177.29 square kilometers.<\/p>\n
But the number has dwindled in recent tears to about 220
\nparks. Most of the parks have been converted into trading sites,
\ngas stations, community centers and police posts.<\/p>\n
\"In the 2001 financial year, we estimate that around 20 to 30
\nparks will be privatized,\" Dadang added.<\/p>\n
The next parks due to be offered to private companies are
\nPatung Arjuna Wijaya Park, Jl.Imam Bonjol Park, Patung Kartini
\nPark, Suropati Park, Lapangan Banteng park, Situ Lembang Park,
\nJl. M.H. Thamrin Park and Monas Park in Central Jakarta, Jl.
\nRasuna Said Park, Melawai Park and Jl. Panglima Polim Park in
