City officials ordered to reveal foreign assets<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Governor Sutiyoso has asked his subordinates in
\nthe city administration to report their foreign assets when they
\ndeclare their wealth to the Public Servants' Wealth Audit
\nCommission (KPKPN).<\/p>\n
The governor went even further by requiring all officials
\nunder his auspices to report the wealth belonging to their
\nfamilies and people closely related to them through marriage.<\/p>\n
\"All their assets, including those of their sons, daughters,
\nsons-in-law, daughters-in-law, should be reported,\" he told
\nreporters after a meeting with KPKPN member Anwar Sanusi at the
\nCity Hall on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso asserted that he would impose administrative
\nsanctions on city officials who failed to declare all their
\nwealth and assets to the new state agency.<\/p>\n
The governor was commenting on a previous statement made by
\nAnwar, who said it was mandatory for all officials, including
\nGovernor Sutiyoso and his subordinates, to register their foreign
\nassets with KPKPN.<\/p>\n
Anwar, who came to the City Hall to promote the commission's
\nongoing program, expected that the general public, including non-
\ngovernmental organizations, would inform KPKPN if they knew of
\ncertain officials in possession of foreign assets who did not
\ndeclare them.<\/p>\n
Rumors have been circulating in the City Hall that some chiefs
\nof city agencies had properties abroad. An official, who was
\namong those implicated in the controversial overseas trip funded
\nby Ancol recreation park operator, reportedly owns two houses in
\nthe U.S. and Australia.<\/p>\n
The foreign properties, mostly houses, are usually inhabited
\nby the officials' children who are studying abroad, while some
\nother houses are rented.<\/p>\n
Neither Sutiyoso nor city spokesman Muhayat would comment on
\nthe reports.<\/p>\n
None of 181 state officials whose wealth has been announced by
\nKPKPN so far, including President Abdurrahman Wahid, Vice
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri, House of Representatives
\nSpeaker Akbar Tandjung and People's Consultative Assembly Speaker
\nAmien Rais, declared that they were in possession of foreign
\nproperties.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said he believed that KPKPN would be able to track
\nthe wealth of city officials, thanks to its skillful and
\ncompetent members.<\/p>\n
\"The commission members cannot easily be deceived. They
\ncomprise professionals, who include former police and military
\nofficers, legal experts and accountants,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Anwar said 207 city officials would have to submit their list
\nof assets to KPKPN immediately after they received the forms on
\nMarch 28. Hundreds more officials, including city councilllors,
\nwill follow.<\/p>\n
But Muhayat said the submission would be made only one month
\nafter Anwar's visit at the latest.<\/p>\n
KPKPN is facing a further obstacle as city councillors have
\nrefused to complete the forms on grounds they were not part of
\nthe officials supposed to be subject to the audit. (jun)<\/p>",
