City needs better fire engines<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): It's high time the capital had submersible pumps
\nand long-range water hoses to deal with fire incidents, according
\nto head of the City Fire Agency, Suharso,<\/p>\n
Speaking at a meeting with Governor Sutiyoso and a visiting
\ndelegation from the Nederlands Instituut Voor Brandweer en
\nRampenbestrijding (NIBRA), a fire institute under the supervision
\nof the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Netherlands
\ngovernment, Suharso said that such equipment was needed to
\nprovide better services to Jakarta residents in fire-prone areas.<\/p>\n
\"We have 13 rivers flowing across the city. But, we always
\nhave problems reaching the water sources during a fire incident,\"
\nhe said on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"We need fire engines, which are equipped with 3-kilometer-
\nlong water hoses and submersible pumps to make it easier for us
\nto reach the fire location,\" he added.<\/p>\n
The City Fire Agency, established on March 1, 1919 by the
\nDutch colonial administration, currently employs 2,446
\nfirefighters and has a total of 132 fire engines.<\/p>\n
Data at the agency shows there were 409 fire incidents in the
\ncapital in the first seven months of this year, compared to 700
\ncases recorded throughout last year.<\/p>\n
\"There is virtually no single day without a fire in the
\ncapital,\" the agency cited.<\/p>\n
Suharso expressed hoped that the visiting delegation could
\nhelp the agency improve its services by providing necessary
\nequipment and also helping to upgrade the skills of the agency's
\nstaff.<\/p>\n
\"They are here with a proposal to provide training, technical
\naids and equipment. All will be delivered in the form of a
\ngrant,\" he said, adding that his office welcomed their offers.<\/p>\n
Governor Sutiyoso said that the city administration welcomed
\nthe proposal.<\/p>\n
\"We just cannot handle the problem (of fires) with the high
\ndensity, limited human resources, skills and equipment.<\/p>\n
\"This assistance is much needed to improve the agency's public
\nservice,\" he told reporters. (lup)<\/p>",
