City needs Army, Police to maintain order<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city authorities are seeking more help from
\nthe military and police in their citywide crackdown on public
\norder offenders.<\/p>\n
A member of the just-concluded operation to maintain security
\nand order, R. Sitindjak, said the presence of Army and police
\ntroops had proven effective in curbing the number of clashes
\nbetween the city authorities and the public, mostly street
\nvendors and buskers, during the crackdown.<\/p>\n
\"I suggested that the city authorities request for more Army
\nand police personnel to help in the operation,\" Sitindjak, who
\nwas in charge of the operation in South Jakarta, said in his
\nreport at the ceremony which marked the conclusion of the
\noperation, code named Yustisi, conducted since Nov. 27, 2000.<\/p>\n
Clashes, due to the use of force by the city authorities,
\noften marred the operation in the past.<\/p>\n
Sitindjak also suggested that future operations be conducted
\nunder a gubernatorial decree to give it legal protection.<\/p>\n
He revealed that in South Jakarta alone, 482 offenders were
\nbrought to trial, more than half of them for having an identity
\ncard. Fines of Rp 5.7 million were collected from minor offenses.<\/p>\n
Head of the city's public order office Raya Siahaan said the
\ncitywide operation brought hundreds of people to trial, resulting
\nin fines totaling Rp 12.9 million.<\/p>\n
During the operation, 11,304 people were detained for
\nviolating public order regulations.<\/p>\n
The operation also targeted becak (three-wheeled public
\ntransportation vehicles) drivers, squatters living river banks
\nand railway stations, drugs addicts, illegal liquor and
\nfirecracker vendors, and unauthorized billboards. (04)<\/p>",
