City installs more traffic controllers<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City's Traffic Control Agency has installed
\nmore Area Traffic Control Systems (ATCS) units throughout the
\ncity to fight the worsening traffic jams.<\/p>\n
With the additional units the agency now has 186 units in its
\nthree zones: 117 ATCS controllers and 24 monitors in the central
\nzone, 25 controllers and five monitors in the west, and 44
\ncontrollers and six monitors in the east zone.<\/p>\n
The city earlier announced it had allocated Rp 10 billion for
\nadditional ATCS devices in 90 locations.<\/p>\n
The agency's head of technical affairs, Nurachman, said new
\ntraffic-prone areas were identified with the help of the traffic
\ncontroller and supporting monitors.<\/p>\n
\"The existing computerized system is still operational but
\nneeds more devices,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The city's ATCS units, controlled from City Hall's third
\nfloor, first began operating around 1978.<\/p>\n
The agency can monitor traffic congestion and the technical
\nfailure of any traffic lights in the city through the integrated
\ncomputerized traffic control system.<\/p>\n
Nurachman said the zoning did not follow mayoralty divisions.
\nThe traffic in all corners of the city was followed by the
\nsystem, he said.<\/p>\n
But the public often gets the impression that the traffic is
\nbeyond control.<\/p>\n
Nurachman said the system was often hit by electricity cuts.
\nAnd the agency's monitoring devices installed near street
\njunctions were often hit by vehicles.<\/p>\n
Nurachman said the agency had tried to respond promptly to
\npublic complaints about traffic lights.<\/p>\n
\"But we are dependent on PLN,\" he said. PLN is the state-owned
