City holds painting expo<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): An exhibition featuring 50 paintings by 17 of
\nIndonesia's most prominent painters from three generations will
\nbe held at Santi Gallery, South Jakarta, beginning today.<\/p>\n
The exhibition of the paintings which carry the theme "Barong
\nEmas" is scheduled to be opened by Mrs. Sri Harmoko, wife of
\nMinister of Information Harmoko, Mrs. Santi Dewi, the owner of
\nthe gallery and the chief organizer of the exhibition, told
\nAntara on Saturday.<\/p>\n
"It will last through Sept. 10," she said, adding that the
\nevent is being held to mark the 50th anniversary of Indonesia's
\nindependence.<\/p>\n
Some of the artists are highly reputed painters who have made
\nnames for themselves not only in Indonesia but also abroad.<\/p>\n
Topping the list is the late Affandi, an internationally
\nacclaimed painter. The others are Bagong Kussudiardjo, Srihadi,
\nSudarsono, Abas Alibasyah, Suparto, Nyoman Gunarasa, Popo
\nIskandar, Roedyat Martadiarja, Sunaryo, Dede Eri Supria, Gunawan
\nHanjaya, Neif, S.Yadi K, Rudy Pranajaya, Yuni A. Wulandari,
\nSoekanto and Nyoman Meja.<\/p>\n
Explaining about the theme, Santi said the Barong is a
\nBalinese mythical creature that brings good and spiritual
\ncleansing. A traditional Balinese dance exists depicting how the
\nBarong struggles hard and eventually manages to defeat the witch
\nRangda.<\/p>\n
"The Barong always triumphs over the witch because it is
\nsiding with the people. Perhaps this can be used as an analogy as
\nto how our independence fighters eventually beat the Dutch
\ncolonial rulers because they fought for the sake of the people
\nwho were oppressed by the Dutch," Santi said. (bas)<\/p>",
