City Hall to study higher bus fare idea<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will carefully study a
\nproposal from the Organization of Land Transportation Businessmen
\nthat city bus fares be raised.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs Tb. M. Rais told
\nreporters yesterday that the city administration would consider
\nthe proposal carefully before making a decision.<\/p>\n
"The city administration understands why the organization
\nproposed the fare hike and we will be studying it carefully,"
\nRais said.<\/p>\n
The chairman of the transport business organization, Aip
\nSjaifuddin, told reporters on Wednesday that the organization
\nintended to propose a fare increase to Governor Surjadi
\nSoedirdja.<\/p>\n
He said the fare on regular buses should be increased from Rp
\n250 (11 U.S. cents) to Rp 500, on Patas buses (quick, limited
\nservice) from Rp 550 to Rp 900 and on air conditioned buses from
\nRp 1,300 to Rp 1,750.<\/p>\n
Aip said transportation companies needed the rise because the
\ncurrent fare did not cover their operating costs.<\/p>\n
Rais said the city administration rejected a proposal to hike
\nthe fare last year because there were some internal problems in
\ntransport companies, such as PT Metro Mini.<\/p>\n
"It was also because of the poor service offered by public
\ntransportation companies to passengers", he added, referring to
\nthe many traffic accidents involving public buses.<\/p>\n
Rais urged bus companies to improve their services so that
\npeople would not object to a fare increase.<\/p>\n
He said the city administration had planned to increase the
\nnumber of public buses in order to meet public transport needs in
\nthe city.<\/p>\n
The municipal administration was planning to add a total of
\n1,000 new buses to city routes, he said.(yns)<\/p>",
