        "content": "<p>City Hall to study higher bus fare idea<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will carefully study a<br>\nproposal from the Organization of Land Transportation Businessmen<br>\nthat city bus fares be raised.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs Tb. M. Rais told<br>\nreporters yesterday that the city administration would consider<br>\nthe proposal carefully before making a decision.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The city administration understands why the organization<br>\nproposed the fare hike and we will be studying it carefully,&quot;<br>\nRais said.<\/p>\n<p>The chairman of the transport business organization, Aip<br>\nSjaifuddin, told reporters on Wednesday that the organization<br>\nintended to propose a fare increase to Governor Surjadi<br>\nSoedirdja.<\/p>\n<p>He said the fare on regular buses should be increased from Rp<br>\n250 (11 U.S. cents) to Rp 500, on Patas buses (quick, limited<br>\nservice) from Rp 550 to Rp 900 and on air conditioned buses from<br>\nRp 1,300 to Rp 1,750.<\/p>\n<p>Aip said transportation companies needed the rise because the<br>\ncurrent fare did not cover their operating costs.<\/p>\n<p>Rais said the city administration rejected a proposal to hike<br>\nthe fare last year because there were some internal problems in<br>\ntransport companies, such as PT Metro Mini.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;It was also because of the poor service offered by public<br>\ntransportation companies to passengers&quot;, he added, referring to<br>\nthe many traffic accidents involving public buses.<\/p>\n<p>Rais urged bus companies to improve their services so that<br>\npeople would not object to a fare increase.<\/p>\n<p>He said the city administration had planned to increase the<br>\nnumber of public buses in order to meet public transport needs in<br>\nthe city.<\/p>\n<p>The municipal administration was planning to add a total of<br>\n1,000 new buses to city routes, he said.(yns)<\/p>",
