City guarantees natural gas for public transportation<\/p>\n

The city administration will ensure the smooth distribution of
\nnatural gas automotive fuel in the city to support its "blue-
\nskies" program.<\/p>\n
This is set out in one of the clauses of a Memorandum of
\nUnderstanding signed on Friday by Governor Sutiyoso, president
\ndirector of state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina, Widya
\nPurnama, as well as state-owned gas distributor Perusahaan Gas
\nNegara (PGN) president director WMP Simanjuntak.<\/p>\n
"We will guarantee the availability of gas stations (for
\npublic transportation)," said Sutiyoso, adding that the current
\nlack of the fuel was one of the main obstacles to boosting the
\nuse of compressed natural gas (CNG) for city transportation
\nvehicles.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor Fauzi Bowo further explained that the
\nadministration would help extend the gas pipeline network --
\ncurrently managed by PGN -- across the city to reach the remoter
\nareas served by public transportation.<\/p>\n
Fauzi said the administration would also invite the private
\nsector to build more CNG stations.<\/p>\n
The MOU states that the administration will act as the
\nregulator for CNG utilization with Pertamina providing gas
\nsupplies and PGN distributing the gas.<\/p>\n
The document also requires the three parties to consolidate
\ntheir agreement by signing a cooperation agreement within three
\nmonths after the signing of the MOU.<\/p>\n
According to Sutiyoso, the MOU was only the first step in the
\nimplementation of Bylaw No. 2\/2005 on air pollution, which
\nstipulates that all public transportation vehicles should use
\nCNG. He added that the availability of an adequate number of CNG
\nstations would also encourage private motorists to use the
\nenvironmentally friendly fuel.<\/p>\n
"We will reduce air pollution in the city, which is the third
\nworst polluted city in the world after Mexico City and Bangkok."<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Widya stressed that his company had long been
\ncommitted to expanding the use of gas by public transportation
\nvehicles as could be seen from its collaboration with private
\nfirms for the constructing of 28 CNG stations, 17 of which were
\nin Greater Jakarta and supplied 403,300 liters per day.<\/p>\n
"But currently there are only 11 gas stations still operating
\nwith total consumption being only 18 percent of total capacity.<\/p>\n
Head of the Jakarta Environmental Management Agency (BPLHD),
\nKosasih Wirahadikusumah, said that during the initial stage, CNG
\nstations would be constructed along the routes of the 15 bus
\ncorridors that is planned will be built across the city.<\/p>\n
"But these CNG stations will not only be for the bus corridor
\nbuses ... other public transportation and private vehicles will
\nalso be able to use them," he added.<\/p>",
