City govt neglects slums<\/p>\n

The thousands of makeshift huts in the slums found butted up
\nagainst the railway tracks in Manggarai, Tanah Abang, Sentiong
\nand Kampung Bandan, in Jakarta, are apparently still beyond
\nproper reordering. The squalid neighborhoods are obviously a
\ndangerous area for people to live and it is believed to be a safe
\nhaven for petty criminals operating aboard trains.<\/p>\n
In fact, the government has the duty to provide slum dwellers
\nwith decent shelter such as apartments with low rent. Instead of
\nwasting money on city councillors' suits and world tours, the
\nmoney should be spent on housing or other facilities for the
\nurban poor.<\/p>\n
Let us hope the Jakarta provincial administration in
\ncooperation with state railway company PTKA will soon find a
\nsolution to help the poor and create order along the railway
\nlines.<\/p>\n
