City faces hurdles on abortion clinics<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The City Health Office has found it difficult to
\ndetect health clinics which illegally perform abortions.<\/p>\n
The office spokesperson, Rita Kusriastuti, said over the
\nweekend that such clinics must be closed down, but catching them
\nin action was not easy. "Most of the clinics are registered as
\nfamily planning centers," she said.<\/p>\n
Rita said that the office could only recommend that certain
\nclinics be closed down for permit violations, such as operating
\nwithout permits or for being managed by people who do not have
\nmedical backgrounds. "We have never had a clinic closed down for
\nillegal abortion."<\/p>\n
Rita also acknowledged that it is not that easy to take prompt
\naction against clinics which violate regulations. "Violations are
\nusually found out years after the clinics operated," she said.<\/p>\n
"Two clinics in Pademangan, North Jakarta and Petamburan in
\nCentral Jakarta were closed down about three years after they
