City enlists experts for development forum<\/p>\n

The city administration has set up a think tank consisting of
\nexperts from various disciplines to help the administration get a
\nhandle on urban problems.<\/p>\n
The group of experts is called the Jakarta Care Forum.<\/p>\n
\"These experts will be my advisers in their own fields. I want
\nclear direction in developing Jakarta,\" Governor Sutiyoso said
\nafter a morning coffee with the experts. \"Their advice is needed
\nto keep our development on track.\"<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said the experts would be provided an office at City
\nHall for them to work.<\/p>\n
\"The experts will only be in the office part-time as they have
\ntheir own formal positions in other institutions.<\/p>\n
\"But the most important thing is that they will be able to
\nhave more substantial discussions with city officials,\" the
\ngovernor said.<\/p>\n
Economists, for example, will be able to provide suggestions
\nto the head of the City Revenue Agency on how to generate more
\nincome, he said.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said the experts would be given some remuneration as
\na sign of the city administration's gratification.<\/p>\n
\"We cannot give them large stipends but at least enough to
\ncover their transportation fees,\" he said.<\/p>\n
City Secretary Ritola Tasmaya emphasized that the experts'
\nrecommendations would not be binding.<\/p>\n
Contacted separately, educator Arief Rachman told The Jakarta
\nPost that all of the experts in the forum were taking a cautious
\nstance toward the project, as it was still not clear what their
\nrights, authority and responsibilities would be.<\/p>\n
\"We are still searching for a suitable mechanism to channel
\nour expertise. But we all agree that every resident has to be
\naware of city development,\" he said.<\/p>\n

\nBambang Brodjonegoro (economist), Budi Tjahjati (regional
\nplanner), Hermawan Kartajaya (marketing specialist), Karnaya
\n(urban designer), Moch. Danisworo (urban designer), M. Ronny
\nNitibaskara (criminologist), Saparinah Sadli (social
