City councillors need a conscience<\/p>\n

The Jakarta Council has become the subject of much criticism.
\nThe media have spotlighted various issues related to Jakarta's
\ncouncillors, such as their high salaries, their studies financed
\nby public funds, their proposal for an increase in their "special
\nallowance" as well as payment for their life insurance.<\/p>\n
Do they only think of their own interests and take advantage
\nof existing loopholes? No doubt they are seduced into seeking to
\nbenefit from the weakness of regulations to accumulate their
\nwealth.<\/p>\n
Have Jakarta's councillors, in their capacity as the city's
\npublic representatives, struggled for the sake of the people in
\nthe region? Have they striven to improve Jakartans' standard of
\nliving?<\/p>\n
In the New Order era, Jakarta's councillors were still mindful
\nof the fate of the people. For example, when fire disasters
\noccurred they visited the victims and expressed their sympathy
\nand concern for the suffering of the victims.<\/p>\n
But today, Jakarta's councillors, even though they have a high
\nincome, do not even bother to pay attention to people's
\nsuffering, let alone provide any assistance.<\/p>\n
They should try to carry out inspections and observe traffic
\njams and the illegal trade of pornographic VCDs in the Glodok
\narea, or hear complaints lodged by sidewalk vendors, visit
\nhospitalized policemen shot by criminals and condole relatives of
\ncivil guards who die after being attacked by mobs.<\/p>\n
Jakarta's councillors should work hard to justify their high
\nincome, instead of merely thinking of their own interests so that
\nthey can enrich themselves.<\/p>\n
