City council question budget allocation for Korpri<\/p>\n

The City Council questioned on Thursday the allocation of Rp
\n1.8 billion (US$180,000) from the 2001 City Budget in the form of
\na donation to the Jakarta chapter of the Indonesian Civil
\nServants Association (Korpri).<\/p>\n
Secretary of the council's commission C for fiscal and
\nbudgetary affairs, Azis Buang, suggested that the donation was
\nineffective as Korpri has no significant activities at present.<\/p>\n
\"The council wants to decline the allocation. It's better to
\nspend the money on poor people,\" said Azis, a member of the
\nIndonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.<\/p>\n
He said that, because Korpri has no clear activities, the
\ndonation could be abused by executives of the organization.<\/p>\n
He urged the administration to immediately explain the use of
\nthe funds.<\/p>\n
Separately, Jakarta Governor Sutiyoso admitted that the
\nadministration still allocated funds to support Korpri, because
\nthe money was originally deducted from the monthly salaries of
\ncivil servants.<\/p>\n
\"If the donation does not reach the target, we could review
\nit. I will ask my staff about it,\" Sutiyoso said at City Hall.<\/p>\n
He admitted that Korpri's activities might not be relevant to
\ncivil servants and pledged to give further consideration to the
\nuse of the fund.<\/p>\n
In the past, Korpri's funds were reportedly used to support
\nthe former ruling Golkar Party.<\/p>\n
Last year, the city allocated Rp 2 billion to Korpri's city
\nchapter.<\/p>\n
Earlier this year, Korpri's former city chapter executive
\nNasrul Idrus was reported to the police and prosecutor's office
\nover alleged corruption involving Rp 4.3 billion.<\/p>\n
Nasrul, who was then moved to the city's civil registration
\noffice, asserted that the scam was conducted by Kopri's
\nexecutives between 1997 and 2000.<\/p>\n
The administration announced recently that it had found
\nirregularities in the financial management of Korpri's city
\nchapter, which resulted in Rp 38 million in losses.<\/p>\n
Some 11 officials, including Nasrul, were given administrative
\nsanctions for abusing the funds.<\/p>",
