City could be 'rocked by riots'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Indonesian Military (TNI) Deputy Commander Adm.
\nWidodo A.S. warned on Monday that the current situation was not
\nconducive enough to hold the General Session of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly (MPR) in November.<\/p>\n
The unsatisfactory climate, particularly viewed from the
\npolitical dimension and the people's psychological preparation,
\ncould even lead to fresh riots in Jakarta, Widodo was quoted as
\nsaying by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"The tension and potential for conflict among members of the
\npublic remains high. Any accelerator and trigger could lead to
\nriots in the capital, and even in other towns (across the
\ncountry),\" the senior Navy officer told the 20th meeting of all
\nthe country's chiefs of military resorts and district commands
\nhere.<\/p>\n
One indication, Widodo said, is evident among the political
\nelites in that they have not shown a strong commitment
\nfor compromise and consensus to settle differences.<\/p>\n
TNI therefore considers political elites and all MPR members
\ncould play significant and distinct roles in making the General
\nSession secure and a success, he added.<\/p>\n
The military also continued its efforts to ask the country's
\npoliticians to play bigger \"positive and proactive\" roles in
\ncontrolling their supporters.<\/p>\n
The world witnessed fierce riots involving thousands of people
\nin Jakarta in mid May last year following the military shooting
\ninto a sea of protesting students.<\/p>\n
The riots, the most violent to ever happen in the capital,
\ncaused massive destruction, leaving more than 1,000 people dead,
\nmany of whom were looters trapped in buildings which had been set
\non fire, and thousand others lost their shops, houses and other
\nproperty.<\/p>\n
During Monday's meeting, Widodo told the military resort and
\ndistrict commanders to stay alert to detect the possibility of
\nmassive rallies and prevent them during the upcoming General
