        "content": "<p>City center fires destroy shops, classrooms<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Two separate fires in Central Jakarta gutted on Tuesday several<br>\nbuildings, including a private school and created traffic<br>\ncongestion.<\/p>\n<p>No fatalities or injuries were reported in the fires, while<br>\nthe financial losses are still being calculated.<\/p>\n<p>The first fire began at about 10 a.m. in the busy business<br>\ndistrict of Mangga Besar, worsening already heavy traffic.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said the fire began in the kitchen of the Medan Jaya<br>\nrestaurant, located in a multistory building. The fire soon<br>\nspread to other businesses in the building, including a pharmacy,<br>\na billiard hall, a telephone kiosk and a computer game center.<\/p>\n<p>The blaze also gutted 10 classrooms at Yayasan Kartini<br>\nkindergarten, elementary and junior high schools, leaving just<br>\none classroom intact.<\/p>\n<p>Junior high school headmaster Abdul Hamid said the students<br>\nwere immediately evacuated from the school compound when news of<br>\nthe fire reached them.<\/p>\n<p>The students were sent home and will be on holiday until<br>\nfurther notice, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Central Jakarta and West Jakarta fire departments deployed<br>\nat least 19 fire trucks and support vehicles to the scene, but<br>\nthe trucks took over an hour to reach the fire because of the<br>\ntraffic.<\/p>\n<p>A second fire occurred in Kebon Sirih subdistrict at about<br>\n11:15 a.m. Five fire trucks were deployed to fight the blaze,<br>\nwhich broke out in a vacant house in a densely populated alley.<\/p>\n<p>Rosy, a resident, said she was leaving her house when she<br>\nspotted the flames and raised an alarm.<\/p>\n<p>The blaze spread to several low-cost boarding houses near the<br>\nNatrabu restaurant on Jl. H. Agus Salim (more commonly known by<br>\nits old name Sabang).<\/p>\n<p>Employees and customers of the restaurant and neighboring<br>\nbusinesses quickly evacuated the shops.<\/p>\n<p>The police temporarily closed off the street to allow fire<br>\ntrucks to reach the scene, causing severe traffic congestion<br>\nalong Jl. KH Wahid Hasyim and Jl. Kebon Sirih.<\/p>",
