City asked to address overlapping bus services<\/p>\n

The city administration should start streamlining overlapping
\npublic buses services, which have contributed significantly to
\nthe disorganized condition of the transportation system in the
\ncity, a transportation analyst said.<\/p>\n
Jack Sumabrata, an urban transportation researcher of Pelangi,
\na non-governmental organization dealing with development and
\nenvironment, said that the problem should be a priority for the
\ncity administration before it introduced a more complex
\ntransportation system.<\/p>\n
"You can see how many bus operators serve the Blok M-Kota
\nroutes. Such a condition can no longer be maintained," Jack told
\nthe press on the sidelines of a seminar on urban transportation
\nmanagement here on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
He was referring to the route from Blok M in South Jakarta to
\nKota in Central Jakarta which will be the main corridor of the
\nbusway project.<\/p>\n
The route is served by air-conditioned buses operated by
\nseveral operators like Maya Sari Bakti, the Djakarta land
\ntransportation operator (PPD) and Bianglala. A number of other
\noperators also serve the route but they start from bus terminals
\nother than Blok M.<\/p>\n
He questioned the administration's plan for the buses which
\nhave served the routes if the busway project is implemented.<\/p>\n
"So far we still don't know what the city transportation
\nagency will do about it," he added.<\/p>\n
He also criticized the agency for opening the route to medium-
\nsize buses, which ply major streets like Jl. Sudirman and Jl.
\nThamrin that should only be served by bigger buses.<\/p>\n
According to Jack, the allocation of transportation services
\nbased on public demand should be part of the method to resolve
\nthe complex transportation problems.<\/p>\n
Well-managed public transportation, which provide high
\nstandard services, will encourage the public to leave their cars
\nat home and begin to use public transportation.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the city transportation agency should begin to
\nclassify which bus services will be permitted to travel on
\ncertain roads.<\/p>",
