City approves new monorail routes<\/p>\n

The city administration has approved the proposal submitted by
\ndeveloper PT Jakarta Monorail on some changes in the monorail
\nroutes.<\/p>\n
\"So far, we have found no problems with the proposed new
\nroutes. We will let the developer choose which one they think is
\nbest,\" said assistant to the city secretary for development
\naffairs IGKG Suena at City Hall on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Suena said that at least four new route changes were planned
\nin the US$630 million (Rp 5.74 trillion) project.<\/p>\n
The first change is the proposed monorail station adjacent to
\nthe Palmerah railway station instead of a station on Jl. Gerbang
\nPemuda in Senayan.<\/p>\n
The change to the route will integrate the monorail and
\ncommuter trains plying the Tangerang-Jakarta route via Serpong
\nand Bintaro residential areas.<\/p>\n
\"We will also face many technical problems if we insist on
\nbuilding the line passing Jl. Gerbang Pemuda,\" Suena said.<\/p>\n
The developer also plans to build a monorail station adjacent
\nto Mal Taman Anggrek on Jl. S. Parman as its last stop instead of
\nRoxy, both in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
PT Jakarta Monorail director Sukmawaty Sjukur said the mall's
\nmanagement has offered a plot of land as a park-and-ride station.<\/p>\n
\"We will coordinate further with state toll road operator PT
\nJasa Marga soon on the possibility of having access to connect
\nthe last stop and the toll road,\" she told The Jakarta Post by
\nphone.<\/p>\n
With the change, the line would be built along the banks of
\nthe West Flood Canal from its depot in Tanah Abang, Central
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
The third change is that the line will pass the Tanah Abang
\nmarket instead of nearby Jl. Lontar amid strong opposition from
\nthe residents along the crowded and narrow street. Most of
\nresidents oppose the plan made by the administration to acquire
\ntheir land.<\/p>\n
Another alternative is the possibility of building the line
\npassing the Bung Karno Sports Complex in Senayan, Central
\nJakarta, before turning left on Jl. Sudirman.<\/p>\n
Previously, outgoing President Megawati Soekarnoputri asked
\nthe administration to reroute the monorail to avoid passing the
\nsports complex area.<\/p>\n
The developer is planning a two-line monorail system. The
\n\"green line\" will serve a 14.8-kilometer route in the city's
\nlucrative business districts of Kuningan, Sudirman and Senayan
\nand the \"blue line\" will serve a 12.2-kilometer route from
\nKampung Melayu in East Jakarta to Taman Anggrek in West Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The green line is expected to start operations in December
\n2006, while the blue line will start in early 2007.<\/p>\n
The monorail will be capable of ferrying up to 270,000
\npassengers per day with fares ranging between Rp 3,500 and Rp
\n7,500 for a single journey.<\/p>",
