City admits poor PR in waste case<\/p>\n

The Jakarta administration acknowledged last week it has kept
\nquiet its plans for four more waste treatment plants in the
\ncapital after strong opposition from locals in areas where plants
\nhave already been established.<\/p>\n
The administration plans to buy four incinerators worth Rp 1
\ntrillion each to reduce its dependency in the operations of the
\nBantar Gebang dump in Bekasi.<\/p>\n
The city been using the dump for 15 years, but since 2002, the
\ndisposal of 6,000 tons of daily waste has been protested by
\nlocals, who have complained about health and environmental
\nimpacts.<\/p>\n
\"We have yet to convince people that we can treat the waste
\nproperly. And, half of that failure is due to our poor public
\nrelations (skills),\" City Sanitation Agency head Rama Boedhi said
\nduring a panel discussion late last week.<\/p>\n
He said that none of the agency's personnel had backgrounds in
\npublic relations, and none had been specifically assigned to
\nhandle the issue or communicate with the people affected by the
\nagency's projects.<\/p>\n
\"No wonder we continue to get opposition from the locals
\nregarding every project we have,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Strong opposition from the Bojong residents in Bogor, West
\nJava, where a waste treatment plant belonging to PT Wira Guna
\nSejahtera was built, has meant the plant has not yet opened.<\/p>\n
Residents of Marunda subdistrict in North Jakarta and Duri
\nKosambi in West Jakarta have also expressed opposition to planned
\nincinerator facilities the city administration plans to build
\nthere.<\/p>",
