Recently, residents in Defiance,\nOhio, have strongly rejected the development of data centres in their\nregion, despite no facilities having been built or operated there\nyet.<\/p>\n<p>According to a poll conducted by Bowling Green State on 31 August,\napproximately 71% of Ohio residents voiced their opposition. \u201cMost\npeople feel like victims of big business,\u201d said Becca Rupp, founder of\nCitizens for Responsible Development, as reported by Reuters on Tuesday\n(22\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n<p>Residents believe that the presence of data centres will lead to\nnumerous negative impacts on their towns, ranging from the conversion of\nagricultural land to surges in electricity demand and high water\nconsumption.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, they have highlighted the potential loss of sales tax\nrevenue exceeding US$2 billion. This figure represents the impact of\ndata centre incentive facilities granted in 2024 and 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding these tax exemptions, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has issued\na moratorium on new applications. However, Reuters noted that the state\nparliament had not taken action before the summer recess began, leaving\nthe decision in a state of uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p>The development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has also become a\npolitically charged issue. For instance, Democratic US Representative\nMarcy Kaptur has accused her Republican opponent, Derek Merrin, of\nsupporting these tax incentives.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Sherrod Brown, who is also contesting the US Senate\nelection in Ohio, criticised his political opponent for promoting AI\ninfrastructure development and tax incentives, labelling them as the\n\u201cbest friends of data centres.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, the campaign team of his opponent, incumbent Jon\nHusted, has rejected these claims. Husted is said to have sponsored\nregulations that require data centre operators to personally bear the\ncosts of constructing additional power plants and transmission\nlines.<\/p>",
