Citibank discriminates<\/p>\n
I recently wanted to use the Internet banking facilities of
\nCitibank to transfer monies from one of my accounts to another.
\nThe transaction was blocked for the following reason: I am a
\nforeigner. Being a long-time customer of Citibank as well as
\nresident of Indonesia I find this behavior discriminatory,
\ninsulting and completely contrary to all the stated lofty
\nobjectives of this bank.<\/p>\n
Apparently Citibank is hiding behind a government regulation
\ninstructing them to do so. If correct, this only makes matters
\nworse.<\/p>\n
If the government singles out the few remaining foreigners for
\nthe illegal money manipulations taking place in Indonesia, they
\nshould read the daily newspapers, for example. These provide a
\nfresh daily menu of Indonesian money manipulation far beyond the
\nimagination of most foreigners. In fact many Indonesians could
\nteach foreigners lessons on how to manipulate money illegally,
\nrather than the reverse.<\/p>\n
Citibank hiding behind the government and blindly kowtowing to
\nregulations is not only improper but also immature. Citibank
\ninstead should have enough power and profits to stand up for
\nconsumers' rights and human rights when short-sighted bureaucrats
\nstep out of line. This event reflects the same thinking in
\ngovernment levels as we saw a few years back, when it was
\nsuggested that AIDS could be prevented from spreading here by
\ncompulsory annual blood tests of foreigners only.<\/p>\n
If Indonesia is serious about foreign investment it also
\nshould seriously review the treatment provided to foreigners by
\nthe government and provide at least a level playing field. Right
\nnow the sign \"Foreigners not welcome\" is hanging on your front
\ndoor.<\/p>\n
