Cisadane Festival opens with boat race<\/p>\n

Tangerang Mayor M. Thamrin officially opened the Cisadane
\nFestival and Cisadane Fair at the Cisadane River alongside Jl.
\nBenteng Raya, Tangerang, on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
The opening of the three-week-long festival, which will end on
\nSept. 23, was marked with a traditional dragon boat race. A total
\nof 38 groups raced in the competition.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of people crowded the riverbank to witness the race
\ndespite the cloudy day.<\/p>\n
"Cisadane River has many functions for Tangerang city.
\nTherefore we must protect it environmentally," Thamrin said
\nduring his speech.<\/p>\n
The river has become the main water supply for people in
\nTangerang mayoralty and regency. However, the City Tap Water
\ncompany has complained that some companies have heavily polluted
\nthe river without being reprimanded.<\/p>\n
Earlier in July, Tangerang regency administration planned to
\nbring to court at least 25 companies for allegedly discharging
\nliquid waste into the regency's rivers.<\/p>\n
According to Tangerang Environment Agency, most of the
\ncompanies did not have a liquid waste treatment plant or an
\nEnvironmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) certificate. Even the few
\nthat had such treatment plants still dumped their waste into
\nnearby rivers.<\/p>\n
The festival and the fair have been staged annually by the
\nmayoralty administration and provide cheap entertainment for
\nlocals.<\/p>\n
"The Cisadane Fair aims to empower people in the city,
\neconomically, socially and culturally," Thamrin said.<\/p>\n
"We hope that the event will encourage more people to visit
\nTangerang," said Iryani, head of Tangerang City Tourism Agency.<\/p>\n
A total of 250 companies -- city-owned, state-owned and
\nprivately owned -- joined this year's Cisadane fair.<\/p>",
