Cirebon Mayor violates election rules: KPU<\/p>\n

Cirebon General Elections Commission (Cirebon KPUD) has found a
\nstrong indication that Cirebon Mayor Subardi violated regulations
\nin the election campaign, a top poll official said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
The violation took place because the mayor failed to take
\nleave while campaigning for Megawati ahead of the Sept. 20
\npresidential election runoff.<\/p>\n
\"After the preliminary findings, the KPU will question the
\nmayor soon, as will the Cirebon Election Supervisory Committee
\n(Panwaslu) in order to shed light on the case,\" said Darumakka,
\nthe chief of the Cirebon KPUD.<\/p>\n
The alleged violation was brought to light after Panwaslu
\nfound a video compact disc (VCD) showing Subardi campaigning for
\nMegawati in Cirebon. The campaign took place in the Women's
\nBuilding in Cirebon, on Sept. 16, the third day of the
\npresidential campaign.<\/p>\n
In the footage, it was found that Subardi officiated the
\nestablishment of Mega-Hasyim Campaign Forum. He was also
\ndiscovered wearing a white T-shirt bearing the picture of
\nMegawati and Hasyim, and he called on the people to vote for
\nthem.<\/p>\n
Darumakka said that the KPU never received a copy of a letter
\nfrom the mayor declaring he was taking leave to campaign, which
\nsuggested that the mayor had campaigned without taking leave of
\nabsence.<\/p>\n
Separately, Wasikin Marzuki, the chief of the Cirebon
\nPanwaslu, said that his office had issued a summons for Subardi,
\ndated Sept. 20. Subardi is invited to the Panwaslu office in
\nCirebon for questioning on Thursday. If he is found guilty,
\nPanwaslu can report him to the police for further investigation,
\naccording to Wasikin.<\/p>\n
The Cirebon mayor could not be reached for comment on
\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
Separately in Yogyakarta, Yogyakarta Panwaslu has discovered a
\ntotal 25 election violation marred the first and second round of
\nthe presidential elections in Yogyakarta.<\/p>\n
The most high profile violation was allegedly committed by a
\ncouncillor at Gunungkidul Regental Council.<\/p>\n
The councillor, from the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle (PDI-P) faction, allegedly voted twice in the Sept. 20
\nrunoff.<\/p>\n
Chief of the supervisory division at Yogyakarta Panwaslu
\nMuhammad Wafiek said that the committee had investigated the
\nfraud and it would probably submit the case file to police on
\nThursday.<\/p>\n
Wafiek said that the councillor in question was Suwarto, who
\nvoted in polling station (TPS) 9 in Kare hamlet and TPS 18 in
\nPandanan hamlet. Both hamlets are located in Sumberejo
\nsubdistrict, Semin district, Gunungkidul regency.<\/p>\n
Suwarto was charged with violating Election Law No. 12\/2003,
\nwhich carries a maximum sentence of four months in prison.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, another member of Yogyakarta Panwaslu, Marzuki,
\nsaid that the remaining 24 election violation cases were
\ndiscovered in other regencies and municipalities in Yogyakarta
\nprovince.<\/p>\n
Aside from the one in Gunungkidul, there were five in
\nKulonprogo regency, nine in Bantul regency, five in Sleman
\nregency and the other five in Yogyakarta municipality.<\/p>",
