Cirebon has two new sultans after royal dispute<\/p>\n

Kanoman Palace in the West Java town of Cirebon has two kings as
\na result of a year-long royal dispute following the death of
\nPrince Haji Muhammad Djalaluddin, the eleventh sultan of the
\nkingdom, last year.<\/p>\n
At about 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Prince Muhammad Saladin was
\ncrowned as Sultan Kanoman during a modest ceremony in the palace.
\nOn Thursday, Prince Raja Muhammad Emirudin was also crowned as
\nSultan Kanoman in a more festive royal inauguration in the same
\npalace.<\/p>\n
But Emirudin's installation turned ugly when some supporters
\nof Saladin attempted to stop the ceremony. The police managed to
\nprevent a possible physical clash after barring Saladin's
\nsupporters from attending the ceremony.<\/p>\n
Led by Saladin' sister, Princess Mawar Kartina, the supporters
\ncontinued to protest Emirudin's inauguration as sultan, saying
\nthat it was a coup d'etat.<\/p>\n
Mawar said that Saladin's supporters would settle the dispute
\nin court.<\/p>\n
The royal dispute started following the reading of the will of
\nSultan Djalaluddin, who named Saladin as his successor. However,
\nsome members of the royal family said that Djalaluddin request
\nwas against Kanoman tradition, which stipulates that the sultan's
\nfirst son from the queen -- in this case Emirudin-- is the
\nlegitimate heir to the throne.<\/p>\n
Saladin is Djalaluddin's son from one of his concubines.<\/p>\n
Some royal family members, who are supported by the people and
\nabout 100 royal officials, oppose the appointment of Saladin as
\nsultan. In January, hundreds of Kanoman royal family members held
\na protest against Saladin.<\/p>\n
The opposition grew because they considered the appointment of
\nSaladin as against the palace tradition.<\/p>\n
\"Appointing a prince in a will is not acceptable. We believe
\nDjalaludin knew that it was not our tradition. We suspect there
\nwas an intent to manipulate and damage Kanoman Palace tradition,\"
\nsaid one of Emirudin's supporters.<\/p>\n
However, Saladin believes that he is the legitimate heir to
\nthe throne after Djalaluddin's will was read before the public on
\nJan. 1 this year.<\/p>\n
Besides the two parties, a third party had also demanded the
\ncrown, that is, Djalaluddin's brother, Muhammad Imamuddin, who
\nwas acting sultan following his death.<\/p>\n
Kanoman Palace is one of three kingdoms in Cirebon. The other
\ntwo are Kasepuhan Palace and Kaceribonan Palace.<\/p>",
