Cipinang jail set ablaze during revolt<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): One prisoner died as hundreds of police quelled
\na revolt inside the Cipinang Penitentiary in East Jakarta in the
\nearly hours of Wednesday morning.<\/p>\n
Director General of Penitentiaries Adi Suyatno said the unrest
\nbroke out when some 60 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officers and
\npenitentiary guards were escorting 50 prisoners, mostly convicted
\non drug offenses, to buses which were to transfer them to
\nTangerang and Cirebon Penitentiaries.<\/p>\n
\"Some of the prisoners suddenly revolted. They broke loose ...
\njoined forces with hundreds of other prisoners and started
\nburning the place down,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The rebellious prisoners, he added, took one of the wardens
\nhostage, but he was released later in the day.<\/p>\n
It took 11 fire engines more than five hours to quench the
\nblaze.<\/p>\n
Minister of Justice and Human Rights Baharuddin Lopa reacted
\nstrongly to the incident by ordering the dismissal of the
\npenitentiary's chief warden, Andronicus Takasiliang, and the
\nremoval of dangerous inmates to the tightly-guarded Nusakambangan
\npenal island off the coast of Central Java.<\/p>\n
\"I have ordered Adi (Suyatno) to institute immediate and
\neffective measures, including revamping coordination among the
\nauthorities in the penitentiary,\" he told journalists after
\nopening a workshop on human rights.<\/p>\n
During the mayhem, some inmates tried to escape by scaling the
\nrear wall of the prison, but none of them succeeded.<\/p>\n
Tear gas was fired several times during the riot, as
\nprisoners, armed with machetes, sickles, knives, and molotov
\ncocktails, threatened the lives of other prisoners and guards.<\/p>\n
Four prisoners were shot in the stampede, with one of them,
\nlater identified as Yadi Suryadi bin Zaelani, alias Morgan, dying
\nfrom a gunshot wound to the head.<\/p>\n
The three injured, Dolly, Edi Sutanto and Nasirin, who were
\nshot in the back, arm and side respectively, were admitted to the
\nNational Police's Kramatjati Hospital in East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Adi said that high-profile prisoners, including Mohamad \"Bob\"
\nHasan and Ricardo Gelael, were unaffected as they were housed in
\nBlock III, which is quite far from the scene of incident in
\nBlocks IA-IE and Blocks IIA-IIF.<\/p>\n
City police chief Insp. Gen. Mulyono Sulaiman gave a slightly
\ndifferent version of the story, stating that the 50 prisoners
\nwere instead being moved to Nusakambangan.<\/p>\n
\"I had been asked by Cipinang Penitentiary to provide extra
\nsecurity for a transfer of prisoners to Nusakambangan on
\nWednesday. I provided the penitentiary with 25 Brimob officers,\"
\nMulyono told reporters at city police headquarters.<\/p>\n
A source in the penitentiary said the incident was sparked by
\nthe inclusion of three of the prisoners' leaders among the 50
\nbeing transferred. The three, identified as Tabah, Domy and Pur,
\nare touted icon figures who represent three different ethnic
\ngroups in the penitentiary.<\/p>\n
\"The 50 prisoners were about to be transferred when suddenly
\nthe minions of these three leaders attacked the guards in a bid
\nto foil the transfer,\" the source, who requested anonymity, told
\nreporters at the scene.<\/p>\n
Donny was due to complete his sentence on April 2, the source
\nadded.<\/p>\n
Adi explained that the government had been relocating inmates
\nfrom the overcrowded Cipinang prison to other penitentiaries
\nnationwide.<\/p>\n
He said the damage caused by the fire amounted to over Rp 250
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
\"All the files on these prisoners and other prison matters
\nhave been burned. We have some copies and data, but that's it.
\nFour prison motorcycles, the computers and some cars have also
\nbeen burned. The administration building and auditorium have been
\nburned down, and the security posts have been severely damaged,\"
