Cikupa clash ends peacefully<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A clash between long-time residents and
\nnewcomers at Telagasari village in Cikupa, Tangerang, ended
\npeacefully yesterday thanks to a meeting arranged by local
\nmilitary officers.<\/p>\n
The two parties hugged each other and apologized during the
\nmeeting led by Tangerang Military District chief Lt. Col.
\nKarseno.<\/p>\n
They all agreed to help repair the houses and other property
\ndamaged in the incident that started Saturday and ended Sunday.<\/p>\n
"It's just a misunderstanding," said a local religious leader,
\nwho also attended the meeting at the military office.<\/p>\n
Two people were wounded and 22 houses were destroyed in the
\nincident.<\/p>\n
Police have questioned at least four people in the case.<\/p>\n
The clash started after the native villagers caught a newcomer
\nstealing clothes in the neighborhood Friday.<\/p>\n
Most newcomers are factory workers who rent houses in the
\nneighborhood.<\/p>\n
The villagers beat-up the suspect, identified as On, 17, and
\nsent him to Cikupa Police subprecinct.<\/p>\n
But On's family and friends who rent houses in a nearby
\nneighborhood unit went to the villagers' houses to ask what was
\ngoing on.<\/p>\n
The newcomers went home after arguing with the villagers.<\/p>\n
The local residents followed throwing stones and burning the
\nnewcomers' houses.<\/p>\n
Over 100 newcomers fled their houses to escape the attack.
