Vice President Jusuf Kalla has said that increased state
\nrevenue is needed to develop health and educational facilities,
\nincluding additional revenue from higher cigarette tax.<\/p>\n
It is right to raise the tax on cigarettes. In fact, the tax
\nshould even be doubled or tripled, given that most smokers will
\ncontinue to buy cigarettes as they are addicted to nicotine.<\/p>\n
The important thing is that the government should maintain
\ntight control as industrialists and their cronies might tempted
\nto print forged duty tags and report fictitious cigarette sales.<\/p>\n
Unless a control and inspection team is set up, a vicious
\ncircle will follow, with some people growing even richer due to
\nthis sort of fraud.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the government should also be transparent as
\nregards its expenditure and avoid waste, because the majority of
\nIndonesian people remain poor and badly need help if they are to
\nbe able to enjoy a decent living.<\/p>\n
