Ciawi dam project to affect 2 districts<\/p>\n

The Bogor administration will start to disseminate information on
\na project to construct a dam in Ciawi along the path of the
\nCiliwung River which will affect two districts, fearing protests
\nfrom residents who object to moving from the area.<\/p>\n
Head of Public Works Agency Nurhayanti said that the central
\ngovernment's project would start in 2007.<\/p>\n
"The project is aimed at mitigating floods in Greater Jakarta,
\nbut there should be a coordination with the Bogor administration
\nto avoid misunderstanding with local residents," she said on
\nMonday.<\/p>\n
She further revealed that the project will affect 204 hectares
\nof land in the Megamendung and Cisarua districts. Hundreds of
\nfamilies will have to vacate the area.<\/p>\n
The project is being carried out by the Center of Development
\nof Ciliwung Cisadane Rivers at the Ministry of Public Works.<\/p>\n
The two are the biggest rivers running through Greater
\nJakarta, including Tangerang, Bekasi and Depok.<\/p>\n
"When the project starts, we will have to relocate houses,
\nschools, several places of worship and villas besides other
\npublic infrastructure," Nurhayanti said.<\/p>\n
The government is currently carrying out a technical survey to
\nmap a blueprint for the project.<\/p>\n
The result, according to Nurhayanti, should be conveyed to the
\npublic to learn how people will respond to the project.<\/p>\n
Head of the Center of Development, Wahyu Hartomo, added that
\nthe project is expected to be completed in 2011.<\/p>\n
"The project will cost the central government Rp 1 trillion
\n(US$112.35 million), which includes the compensation for
\nresidents who will be affected by the project," he said.<\/p>",
