        "content": "<p>As an agrarian region, Cianjur Regency in West Java continues to\ndevelop its agricultural sector through both intensification and\ndiversification efforts. One such initiative involves promoting organic\nrice cultivation, which is considered to have relatively high\nproductivity compared to inorganic methods.<\/p>\n<p>Inna Ratna Sofia, Head of Infrastructure, Facilities and Extension\nServices at the Cianjur Food Crops, Horticulture and Plantation Agency\n(DTPHP), said that organic rice development is currently limited to\ndemonstration plots (demplot). Five locations have been selected as\norganic rice demonstration plots: Warungkondang, Cilaku, Cibeber,\nKarangtengah and Cianjur sub-districts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is still at the demonstration or pilot stage. These organic rice\ndemonstration plots are managed by farmer groups, each covering 5,000\nsquare metres or half a hectare,\u201d she said on Sunday (23\/8).<\/p>\n<p>She noted that grain or rice production from organic methods has\nshown an increasing trend. One hectare of paddy field can produce an\naverage of 8 tonnes of grain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis can be considered a success because with chemical fertilisers\nproductivity is usually only 5-6 tonnes per hectare,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>The harvest index for organic rice is relatively similar to inorganic\nrice. The only difference lies in the treatment during the fertilisation\nprocess.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOrganic rice also depends on water availability. So the harvest\nindex can be two or three times,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Inna said that in the early planting stages, organic rice tends to be\nvulnerable to pests or plant-disturbing organisms. However, the\npotential for pest attacks can be prevented using natural pesticides\nthat farmers can mix themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs for the threat of drought, it is the same. Organic rice still\nrequires a water supply,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, she said, farmers must pay attention to organic rice\nplanting patterns. If the harvest period is calculated correctly, the\nlikelihood of crop failure during the dry season is very small.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe essence of organic rice is more about the treatment, especially\nthe use of fertiliser. Economically, organic rice is certainly more\nprofitable because its productivity is quite high. This will definitely\nhave an impact on farmers\u2019 incomes. However, organic rice does require\nextra care. It requires diligence,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>",
