Chuan seeks motive behind massacre<\/p>\n
BANGKOK (AFP): Thailand's Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai has
\nordered his government to find out why 17 Thai loggers were
\nkilled in Cambodia last week, and officials said the company that
\nsent the workers across the border may face criminal charges.<\/p>\n
Chuan on Tuesday directed the Thai defense and foreign
\nministries to investigate the reason for the killings, which
\nreportedly occurred Nov. 20 in northeast Cambodia's Preah Vihar
\nprovince, a government spokesman said.<\/p>\n
The spokesman said the interior and labor ministries were
\ninstructed to provide assistance to the families of the loggers,
\nwho are believed to have been slain by Khmer Rouge guerrillas.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Labor Minister Paitoon Kaewthong told reporters
\nTuesday that executives of the BLP Import-Export Company, which
\nhired the loggers, may be charged if they violated laws requiring
\nofficial permission to hire Thais to work outside the country.<\/p>\n
If convicted, company officials could face jail terms of up to
\n10 years and fines of US$8,000.<\/p>",
