A discussion event held at Joglo GIK UGM, Sleman, Yogyakarta, and\nattended by several state officials turned chaotic after being stormed\nby hundreds of students on Monday evening (16\/6). The Kopdar Bareng Mas\nDar forum featured Minister of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning\nNusron Wahid, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono, and Head of the\nPoverty Alleviation Acceleration Agency Budiman Sudjatmiko, with the\ntheme \u2018Pancasila Unites the Indonesian Nation\u2019.<\/p>\n
The Kopdar initially proceeded smoothly and in a conducive\natmosphere. The three officials each had their turn to speak on stage.\nThe situation escalated when they were asked to respond to a viral video\nabout former UGM Student Executive Board chairman Tiyo Ardianto, who\ndiscovered a suspected tracking device in his car.<\/p>\n
Sudaryono was the first to respond, followed by Budiman. However,\nbefore Budiman could finish his remarks, a loudspeaker siren suddenly\nsounded from outside the stage. Students then rushed onto the stage and\nquickly surrounded the area. Some unfurled banners reading \u2018UGM Rejects\nTraitors of Reformasi\u2019 and \u2018UGM Rejects Regime Sycophants\u2019. The\nstudents\u2019 chants were not entirely clear, but the most prominent cry was\n\u2018Revolution\u2019.<\/p>\n
Budiman was subsequently evacuated from the stage under escort by\ncampus security before an incident involving the throwing of mineral\nwater glasses broke out. After Budiman was no longer visible, the\nstudents continued searching for him, while dozens to hundreds of other\nstudents blocked the officials\u2019 vehicles at the east exit of GIK.\n\u2018Budiman, where is Budiman!\u2019 the students shouted. \u2018You said you wanted\nto discuss,\u2019 another student yelled. \u2018If Budiman and Sudaryono do not\ncome out, we will not leave!\u2019 another student exclaimed.<\/p>\n
Later, Nusron and Sudaryono came out to meet the students. Both\nappeared with security escorts and headed towards the south gate of UGM.\nHowever, before reaching the exit, the students managed to make Nusron\nand Sudaryono sit cross-legged on the asphalt and engage in dialogue.\nAfter the shouting subsided, a student questioned Nusron about hundreds\nof thousands of hectares of land in Papua that had been converted,\ndisplacing local communities, and demanded accountability from him as\nMinister of ATR\/BPN.<\/p>\n
Nusron\u2019s response, which invited the students to visit Papua to see\nthe facts on the ground, did not satisfy them and instead heightened\ntensions. A few minutes later, Nusron and Sudaryono rose from their\nseated position and moved towards the UGM Roundabout. The students\nattempted to block them with water barriers, but the group with their\nsecurity escort broke through. A chase ensued towards the east of the\nUGM Roundabout. Nusron and Sudaryono were eventually evacuated, leaving\nthe location in a patrol car. The students briefly pursued them towards\nthe west of the UGM roundabout.<\/p>\n
Separately, Deputy Minister of Agriculture Sudaryono and Head of BP\nTaskin Budiman Sudjatmiko spoke out about the incident. In an official\nstatement on Tuesday (16\/6), Sudaryono apologised to the students who\nhad attended but could not participate in the forum optimally due to the\ndisruption. \u2018I apologise to the students who actually wanted to have a\ngood dialogue,\u2019 Sudaryono said. He stated that open discussion was his\nmain purpose for attending the event. \u2018We came to UGM precisely to\ndiscuss. This event had been planned for a long time and had received\npermission from the campus,\u2019 he said. Sudaryono denied claims that he\nleft the location to avoid dialogue, noting that he had even sat on the\nasphalt with the students who pursued him. He affirmed that the\ngovernment under President Prabowo Subianto is open to criticism and\nupholds democracy.<\/p>\n
Similarly, BP Taskin Head Budiman Sudjatmiko regretted that the\ndiscussion was halted due to the incident. \u2018We should have been able to\nhave a healthy and smooth dialogue. I was willing to discuss with the\nstudents. But unfortunately, the conditions were no longer conducive,\u2019\nBudiman said. He admitted he had no objection to staying inside the\nbuilding and meeting the students, but security personnel decided to\nevacuate him due to concerns that the situation would become\nincreasingly uncontrollable.
