        "content": "<p>Chronology of recent major events<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): This is the chronology of major events leading<br>\nup to yesterday's announcement by Harmoko, speaker of the House<br>\nof Representatives and chairman of the People's Consultative<br>\nAssembly (MPR), that he will ask President Soeharto to resign.<br>\nNot all student demonstrations are mentioned here since they have<br>\nbeen taking place almost daily since March.<\/p>\n<p>March 9: MPR chairman Harmoko and his deputies -- Lt. Gen.<br>\nSyarwan Hamid of the Armed Forces (ABRI) faction, Abdul Gafur of<br>\nGolkar, Fatimah Achmad of the Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI)<br>\nand Ismail Hasan Metareum of the United Development Party (PPP)<br>\n-- ask Soeharto to serve as president for the 1998\/2003 period.<\/p>\n<p>March 11: Soeharto and B.J. Habibie take oath of office as<br>\npresident and vice president respectively.<\/p>\n<p>March 14: Soeharto forms new cabinet.<\/p>\n<p>April 4: Education minister Wiranto Arismunandar bans<br>\ndemonstrations on campuses. The ban is largely ignored.<\/p>\n<p>April 15: Soeharto tells students to go back to class and stop<br>\nprotesting. The appeal is ignored.<\/p>\n<p>April 18: ABRI chief Gen. Wiranto and 14 cabinet members hold<br>\na dialog with students and government critics. Most student<br>\nleaders boycott the event. A<br>\npolice officer is pelted to death in Bogor, reportedly by<br>\nstudents.<\/p>\n<p>House Deputy Speaker Syarwan Hamid says demands to replace<br>\nSoeharto \"does not reflect\" the views of the majority of people.<\/p>\n<p>May 12: Four students of Trisakti University are shot dead by<br>\nsecurity forces during a peaceful demonstration demanding reform.<\/p>\n<p>May 13: Four Trisakti students are buried, and unofficially<br>\ndeclared \"heroes of reformation\". Minor riot breaks out in<br>\nJakarta.<\/p>\n<p>May 14: A newspaper quotes Soeharto in Cairo as saying that he<br>\nis ready to resign.<\/p>\n<p>Massive riots erupt in Jakarta, about 500 people, mostly<br>\nlooters, die trapped inside burning shopping malls.<\/p>\n<p>May 15: Soeharto returns from Cairo, denies ever saying he was<br>\nready to stand down, but adds that he will do so if the people no<br>\nlonger have trust in him.<\/p>\n<p>Unrest spreads to Surabaya, Yogyakarta and other towns.<\/p>\n<p>The government cuts fuel and electricity prices.<\/p>\n<p>May 16: Soeharto says he will reshuffle the cabinet.
