Christa Pike, a death-row inmate in the United States, has regained consciousness after a failed lethal injection execution in Tennessee on 30 September, and her lawyer says her first words were "Where am I?" and "Who are you?". The case has prompted an emergency hearing to preserve evidence, which could underpin future legal action against the state. Although this article concerns a US case, it is relevant to Indonesian readers as a rare, significant development in capital punishment and state accountability.

Christa Pike, a convicted murderer in the United States, has regained
consciousness after receiving medical treatment following a failed
lethal injection execution. Her lawyer has revealed her first words
after waking up.

Reported by the BBC on Thursday (8 October 2026), Pike’s first words
were “Where am I?” and “Who are you?”

Her lawyer, Randy Spivey, said that for several days her legal team
had believed Pike was brain-dead and expected her life support would
soon be withdrawn. However, there was a development that “surprised
everyone” when Pike began speaking on Tuesday (6 October), although she
could recall only a few details of the execution attempt.

Pike, he said, had helped the execution team locate a vein in her arm
and had been friendly and polite while being injected. She then woke up
in hospital with a tube in her throat, surrounded by people she did not
know. Both of her arms, Spivey said, are now “severely swollen”.

“We don’t know what impact all of this will have on her mental
health,” said Spivey, adding that his client feels “angry and confused”
as a result of the traumatic experience.

He added that Pike also developed a blood clot in one of her arms and
pneumonia, and is unable to swallow. Pike is believed to be the only
person to have survived a lethal injection execution attempt.

After it was confirmed that Pike would not die following the
administration of two doses of pentobarbital, she was taken to hospital.
There, she remained unconscious for several days while medical teams
worked to clear the chemical substances from her body.

Pike’s lawyers appeared before a judge at an emergency hearing, where
her legal team requested that all evidence relating to the failed
execution be preserved. This evidence could form the basis of future
legal action against the state.

Luke Ihnen, one of Pike’s lawyers, opened his remarks by describing
the various “obstacles” that had hindered communication with his
client.

“Until yesterday, our client was unconscious and unable to
communicate,” he told Judge Chancellor I’Ashea Myles. He added that Pike
is now able to “speak in a limited way”.

Will Ayers, Assistant Attorney General of Tennessee, highlighted the
“unusual procedural situation” in the case. The judge agreed with this
view.

He argued that an emergency application was in fact unnecessary, as
the state was already obliged to store and secure such evidence.
Nevertheless, Judge Myles ordered that “everything that was in the
execution chamber must be stored and secured”, including IV lines and
syringes, as well as related waste such as packaging, product
information sheets and labels.

The judge also requested documentation of Pike’s psychological
condition before, during and after the failed execution attempt on 30
September.

For background, Pike was sentenced to death after murdering Colleen
Slemmer together with her boyfriend in 1995. She survived two lethal
injection doses on 30 September in Tennessee.

Experts and her legal team said her recovery is unprecedented, and no
other inmate in the US is known to have survived a lethal injection
administered by execution officials.
",
