Choreographers set to gather at Surakarta dance festival<\/p>\n

SURAKARTA, Central Java (JP): While dance choreographers
\ncreate works for themselves and others, they rarely have the
\nchance to express themselves as solo dancers.<\/p>\n
It takes intellect, imagination, intensity and a profound
\nunderstanding to build the creative energy necessary for a
\nperformance. They need synergy and supreme skills to bring all
\ntheir energies together, to put on stage for an audience the
\ncreativity which has taken years of painstaking practice and
\ndiscipline to learn and hone.<\/p>\n
Often, with all their other commitments in the effort to earn
\na living, choreographers are too spent to present their
\nindividual efforts.<\/p>\n
But an effort is under way to redress the balance. They will
\nhave the opportunity to express themselves at the Solo Dance
\nFestival 2001 from Saturday to Monday.<\/p>\n
Performing arts organizer MATaYA Production, together with the
\nIndonesian College of Art (STSI) in Surakarta, has put together
\nthe festival in homage to choreographers-solo dancers. Both
\ninstitutions decided to use \"solo\" in the title of the festival
\nbecause it not only denotes the other name for Surakarta, but
\nalso the efforts of dancers on their own.<\/p>\n
Exploring the theme Transcultural in the Body, the festival
\nwill not only feature dance performances, but also a performing-
\narts photography exhibition, an informal meeting of dancers and a
\nworkshop on the Indramayu Mask Dance.<\/p>\n
Twelve choreographers-solo dancers are scheduled to
\nparticipate, coming from Yogyakarta, Malang in East Java, Padang
\nand Padang Panjang in West Sumatra, Medan in North Sumatra,
\nJakarta, Makassar in South Sulawesi, Indramayu in West Java and
\nthe host city.<\/p>\n
The festival will be held at Teater Besar, STSI Surakarta, Jl.
\nKi Hajar Dewantara 14, Kentingan Jebres, Surakarta.<\/p>\n
The workshop will be led by a well-known mask dancer from
\nIndramayu, Ibu Wangi Indriya, and there will also be a special
\ndance performance from the Mangkunegara royal court.<\/p>\n
Ibu Tarwo Sumosutargio, a 68-year-old dancer from the court,
\nwill perform Golek Montro, a repertoire that reflects the
\nacculturation between the courts of Ngayogyakarta, which is the
\nYogyakarta palace, and Mangkunegara.<\/p>\n
The organizer of this great event is a network for performing
\narts which was founded five years ago in the city. It has become
\na partner and a network for those who consider themselves as
\nperforming-arts artists and activists in creating creative works
\nthe country. It also provides promotional services for the
\nperforming arts and cultural information.<\/p>\n
Its stated vision is to create a balance between management of
\nperforming arts productions and the creative processes of the
\nartists.<\/p>\n
Ultimately, it wants to become a creative hub for the
\nIndonesian performing arts community.<\/p>\n
The membership of the institution is open to all involved in
\nthe performing arts and its interdisciplinary nature is an
\nattempt to provide space and opportunities to all of those who
\nare experts and professionals in their fields.<\/p>\n
In the past five years MATaYA Production has worked together
\nwith many arts groups, from dance, theater, music and fine arts,
\nin the country. Since 1998 it has held a dance forum specifically
\nfor women choreographers. Held every two years, it has already
\nemerged as an important dance forum for women choreographers from
\nIndonesia and abroad.<\/p>\n
