A humanoid robot developed by Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor\nhas successfully run 100 metres in 9.32 seconds, according to a report\nby China\u2019s state television.<\/p>\n
The time beats the 100-metre world record still held by Jamaican\nsprint legend Usain Bolt.<\/p>\n
Citing Al Jazeera and CCTV, the robot named Lightning reached a top\nspeed of 14.5 metres per second during a trial event ahead of the second\nWorld Humanoid Robot Games, which opened in Beijing on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The result surpasses Bolt\u2019s men\u2019s 100-metre world record of 9.58\nseconds, set at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009.<\/p>\n
China is pushing the development of humanoid robots as one of its\nemerging strategic industries. Policymakers and companies in the country\nbelieve advances in AI and hardware will accelerate the deployment of\nhumanoid robots in manufacturing, logistics and consumer\napplications.<\/p>\n
Lightning previously won the Beijing half marathon over 21 kilometres\nin April with a time of 50 minutes 26 seconds. That result was even\nfaster than the average pace required to achieve the men\u2019s human\nhalf-marathon world record.<\/p>\n
When competing in the half marathon, the Lightning robot stood 169 cm\ntall with a leg length of 95 cm.
