        "content": "<p>Chinese invited to Thailand<\/p>\n<p>BANGKOK (AP): Thailand is wooing wealthy ethnic Chinese<br>\nfleeing riots in Indonesia and other foreigners to take up legal<br>\nresidence in the country, with the price of admission 10 million<br>\nbaht (US$250,000) in investment.<\/p>\n<p>Capt. Sirichai Tchasuriyanorakul of the Immigration Police<br>\nconfirmed yesterday that the little-known program, launched last<br>\nJuly to raise money as Thailand's economy went into a tail-spin,<br>\nhas targeted Chinese fearful of turmoil in Indonesia, Hong Kong,<br>\nMacau and Taiwan.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand hopes to attract 5,000 new permanent residents<br>\nthrough the program, though first-year results have been well<br>\nunder target. Only 106 people have applied, of which a mere 52<br>\nhave been granted permanent residency.<\/p>\n<p>Those approved can pay the entry fee by either buying stocks<br>\nand shares, purchasing a condominium, buying Thai government<br>\nbonds, or depositing the money with the central bank in<br>\ncertificates of deposit.<\/p>",
