China\u2019s Foreign Minister Wang Yi conducted a series of telephone\nconversations with foreign ministers from four Islamic nations\u2014Kuwait,\nBahrain, Pakistan, and Qatar\u2014to discuss the latest developments in the\nMiddle East region, which is experiencing escalating tensions.<\/p>\n
During his conversation with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah\nJaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah on Monday, 9 March, Wang Yi expressed\nappreciation for the consistent stance of Gulf states in promoting the\nresolution of conflicts through dialogue and negotiation.<\/p>\n
\u201cChina will continue to work towards peace, and China\u2019s special envoy\nfor Middle East affairs has departed for the region to conduct mediation\nand will strengthen communication and exchange with Kuwait and other\ncountries,\u201d Wang Yi stated in a written statement on the Chinese Foreign\nMinistry\u2019s website on Thursday, 12 March.<\/p>\n
Wang Yi also highlighted military actions by the United States and\nIsrael against Iran that occurred whilst negotiations between Iran and\nthe US were still ongoing. He noted that such actions lack authorisation\nfrom the United Nations and are therefore deemed to violate\ninternational law.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he emphasised that the sovereignty, security, and\nterritorial integrity of Gulf states must be fully respected. He also\ncondemned any attacks targeting civilians or non-military targets.<\/p>\n
Sheikh Jarrah outlined the latest developments in the regional\nsituation. He affirmed that Kuwait is not directly involved in the war\nbut continues to feel the impact of the conflict in the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cGulf states, including Kuwait, remain committed to resolving\ndisputes through dialogue whilst maintaining their legitimate right to\nself-defence. Kuwait greatly appreciates China\u2019s position and efforts,\nand is prepared to strengthen communication and coordination with China\nto jointly promote the restoration of security and stability in the\nregion,\u201d Sheikh Jarrah stated.<\/p>\n
In a separate conversation with Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif\nbin Rashid Al Zayani on Monday, 9 March, Wang Yi expressed concern over\nescalating tensions in the Gulf region, including their potential impact\non Bahrain\u2019s security.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a strategic partner of Gulf states and a responsible major power,\nChina has actively promoted peace and the cessation of war. The way out\nof the impasse lies in the early resumption of dialogue and negotiation\nto restore peace,\u201d Wang Yi said.<\/p>\n
In response, Al Zayani affirmed Bahrain\u2019s commitment to continuing to\nsupport peace efforts and rejecting all forms of illegal attacks.<\/p>\n
\u201cBahrain is ready to cooperate with other Gulf states to enhance\ncommunication and coordination with China on bilateral and multilateral\nplatforms, including the UN, to achieve regional peace and stability as\nsoon as possible,\u201d Al Zayani stated.<\/p>\n
Wang Yi also spoke with Pakistani Foreign Minister Mohammad Ishaq Dar\non Tuesday, 10 March. In that conversation, he expressed his opposition\nto attacks targeting Gulf states and condemned attacks on civilian\nfacilities.<\/p>\n
\u201cChina opposes attacks on Gulf states and condemns all attacks on\ncivilian facilities and innocent civilians.\u201d<\/p>\n
He also expressed appreciation for Pakistan\u2019s efforts in easing\nregional tensions.<\/p>\n
\u201cChina values Pakistan\u2019s mediation efforts to ease regional tensions\nand is ready to maintain coordination and multilateral and bilateral\ncooperation with Pakistan, supporting Pakistan in continuing to play a\nconstructive role, and jointly working to restore peace and stability in\nthe region as soon as possible,\u201d Wang Yi said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Ishaq Dar outlined Pakistan\u2019s position regarding the\nsituation in Iran and urged all parties to exercise restraint and\nresolve the crisis through peaceful negotiation.<\/p>\n
The two ministers also discussed the border conflict between Pakistan\nand Afghanistan.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe top priority is to prevent escalation of the conflict and return\nto the negotiating table as soon as possible, and China firmly supports\nPakistan in its counter-terrorism efforts and hopes that Pakistan will\ncontinue to make maximum efforts to ensure the safety of Chinese\npersonnel, projects, and institutions in Pakistan,\u201d Wang Yi stated.<\/p>\n
The final conversation was held with Qatar\u2019s Prime Minister and\nForeign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Tuesday, 10\nMarch.<\/p>\n
On that occasion, Wang Yi affirmed that China, as a permanent member\nof the UN Security Council, always upholds principles and defends\njustice in international affairs.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe continuation of war will only bring losses and will cause\ngreater losses for all parties involved. China calls for an immediate\nceasefire and cessation of hostilities, a political resolution to this\nissue, and supports Gulf states in taking control of the region\u2019s\nfuture,\u201d Wang Yi said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Al Thani emphasised that Qatar must still take necessary\nself-defence measures whilst increasing diplomatic efforts to prevent\nthe spread and escalation of the crisis.<\/p>\n
Tensions in the region escalated following military action by the\nUnited States and Israel on 28 February 2026. The strikes were reported\nto have killed Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and bombed a\ngirls\u2019 school in southern Iran.<\/p>\n
