As the Ukraine crisis continues with an increasingly intense\nbattlefield situation and mounting civilian suffering, every effort must\nbe made to de-escalate the situation and achieve a ceasefire and an end\nto the fighting, a Chinese envoy to the United Nations said on\nMonday.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a UN Security Council briefing on Ukraine, Sun Lei,\nChina\u2019s deputy permanent representative to the UN, said the recent\nintensification of hostilities and escalating military confrontation\nbetween the parties would only dim the light of peace.<\/p>\n
\"This trend is extremely dangerous and must be stopped immediately,\"\nhe said.<\/p>\n
Noting that military confrontation offers no solution but instead\ndeepens divisions, erodes trust, and increases the risk of further\nuncontrolled escalation, the Chinese envoy called on the relevant\nparties to remain calm, exercise restraint, strictly abide by\ninternational humanitarian law, and refrain from targeting civilians,\ncivilian infrastructure, and humanitarian workers.<\/p>\n
\"Every effort must be made to de-escalate the situation and achieve a\nceasefire and an end to the fighting,\" Sun said.<\/p>\n
China, Sun continued, has taken note of the latest statements from\nthe United States, the Russian Federation, and Ukraine regarding peace\nnegotiations, as well as the differences in positions that remain among\nthem. However, as long as negotiations continue, there is still hope for\npeace.<\/p>\n
\"The more complex the situation becomes, the more important it is to\nmaintain confidence and intensify efforts,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He called on all relevant parties to demonstrate political will and\nflexibility, and to properly address each other\u2019s legitimate security\nconcerns in order to reach a comprehensive, lasting, and binding peace\nagreement as soon as possible.<\/p>\n
Sun also said the crisis has developed to a stage where the\nunderlying contradictions are extremely complex and the interests of all\nparties are closely intertwined.<\/p>\n
He called on all relevant parties to uphold the concept of common,\ncomprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security; commit to\nresolving the root causes of the crisis in accordance with the\nprinciples of the UN Charter; and work towards establishing a balanced,\neffective, and sustainable regional security architecture to ensure\nlasting peace and stability in Europe.<\/p>\n
